Bonnies start play at Cornell Invite

ITHACA, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team finished day one of the Cornell Invite Friday afternoon with a strong effort from some new faces.

In Pool A singles play senior Diego Valdenegro won his opening-round match in straight sets before falling in the next round to Binghamton's Arnav Jain, 6-1, 6-3. Also in Pool A play, junior Chris Post took the first set before losing a close match to Ivan Rummel of Stony Brook, 1-6, 7-5, (10-8) in the opening round.

Freshman Luis Guevara was the story in Pool B, winning his first two matches to set up a quarterfinal match Saturday morning against Roope Kailaheimo of Stony Brook. Guevara defeated John Lucero of Army in straight sets and followed it up with a three-set win over Lehigh's Ryan Krueger, 5-7, 6-3, (10-6).

Valdenegro teamed with freshman Oscar Yanez at in Pool B doubles play, posting an 8-3 win to make a date in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Juniors Mikhail Sudakov and Enric Larregola dropped their first doubles match of the season in Pool A play, losing 8-5 to Stony Brook.

Multiple Bonnies qualified for various consolation brackets and will continue play through the weekend. The Cornell Invite runs through Sunday and features players from eight different teams.
