St. Bonaventure Cross Country / Track Fall Newsletter

Dear Bonnies Cross Country Alumni,

We are thrilled to welcome a brand-new year for St. Bonaventure Cross Country! The start of the 2025 season is almost here, and we could not think of a better way to kick it off than by hosting the Little Three Cross Country Championship and Alumni Race right here on campus on Saturday, September 6.

Last week, our program wrapped up Cross Country Camp Week, and we are energized by the dedication and enthusiasm our athletes showed. We are also excited to announce the growth of our Cross Country and Track roster to 76 athletes this year, marking it one of the largest groups in SBU history. The energy and commitment of this roster promise an exciting season ahead, both in training and in competition.

The Little Three meet is one of the longest-standing traditions in Western New York collegiate running, and having it return to our home course adds even more excitement. It is always a spirited competition between St. Bonaventure, Canisius, and Niagara, and our athletes are eager to rise to the challenge. For our program, it is more than just a race — it is a chance to showcase our team’s hard work and growth in front of the people who mean the most to us: our families, our classmates, and our alumni. This year also marks the return of the Alumni Race, which has become a highlight of the weekend. It is inspiring for our student-athletes to line up alongside those who wore the brown and white before them. Your participation, whether you choose to race, cheer, or simply reconnect with old teammates, reminds our athletes that they are part of something bigger — a program with history, tradition, and a family-like bond that extends well beyond graduation.

Our team has put in a dedicated summer of training, and we are excited to see that effort come to life. We are especially encouraged by the leadership developing within our returning athletes and the energy our newcomers have already brought to the program. Together, this group has set high goals for the season, and we are confident in their ability to represent St. Bonaventure with pride, determination, and sportsmanship.

As alumni, your continued support makes a true difference. Whether it’s attending a meet, mentoring a student-athlete, or simply wearing your Bonnie gear and cheering from afar, you help carry forward the values and spirit of this program. We hope you will join us on September 6th to celebrate the start of the season, reconnect with fellow Bonnies, and be part of what promises to be a memorable day for our team and our community.

Thank you for all that you do for St. Bonaventure Cross Country. We look forward to seeing many of you on campus soon and to keeping you updated throughout what we know will be an exciting and competitive season - Go Bonnies!

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Colin McCarthy, '25

My four years at Bona's was an experience like no other in my life. My time on this team has taught me so many traits that transcend running, discipline, self confidence, accountability, how to handle the highs and lows of life, how to lead, how to build good culture, and so much more. It was an honor to be a part of this close knit brotherhood of a team we built. My time on this team is something I will hold dear to me for as long as I live. In such an individualized sport, I began to understand more than ever what it means to be a part of a team, and making that team feel like a brotherhood.

Going forward, I plan to go right into marathon training and maybe some ultra running down the line. I’m still training as if I were a collegiate athlete, I love everything about the sport and the process it takes to improve myself every day, and thats a feeling I don’t want to let go of for as long as I can. My next big race going forwards is the Boston Marathon in 2026, which I qualified for at Buffalo last may with a 2:35:50. I’m looking forward to toeing up on the line with some former teammates and other alumni.
