Bonnies Use Late Run To Drive Past Feisty Edinboro In Exhibition

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – A 16-4 game-closing run allowed the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team to pull away from a feisty Edinboro squad Friday evening, 75-65, in an exhibition contest at the Reilly Center.

Trailing 61-59 with 4:03 left, the Bonnies got a lay-in from senior Megan Van Tatenhove to spearhead a 9-0 stretch as part of that game-deciding run. After two Alaina Walker free throws, senior Jessica Jenkins knocked down a 3 before Van Tatenhove capped the run with another lay-up – this one on a fastbreak following a CeCe Dixon steal.

Van Tatenhove and Walker both recorded double-doubles as Van Tatenhove netted 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Walker tallied 12 points and grabbed 10 caroms. Jenkins led all scorers with a 19-point performance on 5-of-10 shooting from 3-point range.

Edinboro, which is ranked preseason No. 23 in the Division II USA TODAY/ESPN Coaches Poll, led by as much as 11 in the first half and took a 34-31 lead into the halftime break.

The Fighting Scots and Bonnies traded buckets in the second half as the score was tied 10 times during the course of the night and the lead changed hands eight different times.

Kiara Brown led a trio of Boro double-figure scorers with 17 points, while Renee' Brown added 13 and Hope Mancini contributed 12. Edinboro shot 37.5 percent from the field (24-64), including a 35.7-percent clip from long range (10-28).

The Bonnies faced full-court pressure from Edinboro the majority of the night, forcing the Brown and White into 19 turnovers which the Fighting Scots turned in 17 points.

While the pressure resulted in 19 turnovers, it also sent St. Bonaventure to the line 39 times as the Bonnies knocked down 31 of those attempts. Comparatively, Edinboro went 7-of-9 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Doris Ortega scored 14 points while grabbing three rebounds and issuing a team-high-tying three assists. Senior Jennie Ashton contributed four points – all on free throws – and six rebounds off the bench for the Bonnies, and all of that came in the first half from the Texas native.

St. Bonaventure will officially tip off the 2011-12 campaign next Saturday, Nov. 12, when it heads to New York City to face No. 25/RV St. John's. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. from Carnesecca Arena.
