NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The St. Bonaventure men's tennis trio of Oscar Yanez, Luis Guevara and Elliot Fanshel each lost their opening round singles matches at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals Championships at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
Playing out of the qualifying singles draw, Yanez and Guevara dropped first-round matches on Thursday to open the six-day event, which features the top Division I collegiate players from across the Northeast.
Yanez won his first set against Cornell's Kyle Berman but ultimately fell 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Guevara, meanwhile, was ousted, 6-2, 6-1, by Marist's Joris Van Eck. Both Berman and Van Eck won their next matches to earn berths in the main singles draw.
Fanshel, who started in the 128-player main singles draw, also won his first set but ended up losing, 2-6, 6-0, 6-0, to Binghamton's Ismael Dinia on Friday.
In doubles play on Friday, the Bonnies' senior duo of Yanez and Guevara was defeated 8-4 by Fairfield's Erik Kremheller and Cameron Amyot in a first-round match.
