OPENING TIP OVERVIEW
The St. Bonaventure women's basketball team (4-4) looks to leave their four-game losing streak behind and create another winning streak when they take on Toledo (5-1) in the championship game of the Toledo Glass City Tournament on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
SCOUTING TOLEDO
Toledo defeated SIU-Edwardsville 59-43 following the Bonnies 56-36 win over Southern. Naama Shafir leads the Rockets in scoring with 10.5 points per game and led them with 12 points against SIU-E in just 12 minutes of action after sitting out the second half. Three other players scored nine points in the win. Like the Bonnies, Toledo boasts four players averaging 8.0 points or more this season. Andola Dortch was named the 2012 MAC Defensive Player of the Year at the end of last season and is averaging 9.2 points and 3.8 assists per game so far this year.
The Rockets have wins over Arkansas State, Colorada State, Santa Clara, Nevada and SIU-E with their lone loss coming at No. 22/23 Dayton by a score of 79-76.
vs. SOUTHERN
The Bonnies jumped out ahead early and never trailed as they cruised to a 56-36 victory in their first ever meeting with the Jaguars or a SWAC team. Alaina Walker was the leader on the court for the Bonnies once again, scoring 15 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Ashley Zahn contributed 11 points and a career-high six rebounds. The freshmen were also key contributors in this one as Katie Healy scored six points while collecting six caroms. Nyla Rueter scored five points and picked up a career-best five boards. CeCe Dixon scored nine points. Doris Ortega tracked down seven rebounds.
STREAK BREAKER
With their win over Southern Dec. 1, the Bonnies broke out of a four-game losing streak, their first since the 2006-07 season. The avoided their first five-game losing streak since the 2005-06 season, a team that went 9-18 with a pair of 5+ game losing streaks.
DOUBLE-UP
The Bonnies have now had multiple players in double-figures seven of their eight games this season. On four occassions they have had as many as three players in double digits. That number has often included Ashley Zahn who is having a breakout season. She has scored in double figures four times this season, including three in a row. SIx different players have scored in double-figures at least once already this season including two freshmen (Healy, Rueter).
