ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team returns to the court for the SBU Fall Classic on Friday afternoon. The Bonnies are hosting Niagara and Roberts Wesleyan in the three-day tournament.
Preliminary doubles competition is scheduled for Friday, while preliminary singles competition kicks off on Saturday. On Sunday, players will compete for tournament doubles and singles championships. Eight players from each team are scheduled to participate in at least three doubles and three singles matches during the event.
On Friday, the Bonnies' doubles teams will be competing against Roberts Wesleyan at 3 p.m. and Niagara at 4 p.m. On Saturday, SBU's singles players face opponents from Niagara at 1 p.m. and Roberts Wesleyan at 4 p.m. Competition begins at 10 a.m. Sunday.
The tournament is scheduled to be played at the on-campus outdoor courts, weather permitting. The SBU Fitness Center will host competition if needed.
Four current St. Bonaventure players won singles flight championships at last year's SBU Fall Classic, which included Roberts Wesleyan and Saint Joseph's. The Bonnies' championship foursome of Elliot Fanshel, Luis Guevara, Javier Ortiz and Trevor Haskell (pictured) combined to go 10-1 in singles matches. Fanshel and Guevara also partnered for a doubles flight championship, while teammate Oscar Yanez contributed to another doubles title for SBU.
The SBU Fall Classic is the second tournament this fall for the Bonnies, who opened the year at the Navy Invitational. St. Bonaventure's top doubles team of Guevara and Yanez went 2-1 and fell one win short of winning the Flight A championship at the four-team tournament.
SBU doubles teams of Fanshel and Gabriel Cardenas, and Ortiz and Celso de Vera Rehberger, each collected one win at Navy. Guevara, Ortiz, Yanez and de Vera Rehberger, meanwhile, accounted for one singles victory apiece.
Niagara recently competed in the three-day Bison Quad tournament against St. Francis (Pa.), Loyola (Md.) and host Bucknell. Brandon Gallegos won three matches to win the Flight B singles title for the Purple Eagles. In doubles action, Gallegos and teammate Lorenz Schwojer won three matches before being ousted in the tournament's title match.
Roberts Wesleyan brings a 5-1 team record into the weekend. Each of the team's seven singles players won at least one match at the 32-team USA/ITA East Regional Championships last week.
