ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's tennis doubles team of Oscar Yanez and Luis Guevara (pictured) won both of its two matches Friday to open the SBU Fall Classic.
The Bonnies' top duo topped Roberts Wesleyan's Julio Toldeo-Lopez and Charles Farres, 8-5, to open the day and followed that win up with an 8-4 triumph Niagara's Michael Elortegui and Brandon Gallegos.
Yanez and Guevara, both seniors, improved to 4-1 on the season and will compete for a flight championship in the three-team tournament when play wraps up on Sunday. Players from SBU, Roberts Wesleyan and Niagara are schedule to compete against one another in singles competition on Saturday.
The Bonnies' doubles teams of Elliot Fanshel and Celso de Vera Rehberger, and Trevor Haskell and Gabriel Cardenas also picked up victories over Roberts Wesleyan as SBU swept the three matches contested between the teams.
St. Bonaventure split four doubles matches against Niagara. The Bonnies' team of Mihai Ene and Javier Ortiz backed up the victory by Yanez and Guevara over the Purple Eagles with an 8-3 win over Matt Bojanowski and Joseph Gentile.
Niagara's doubles teams of David Raymond and Olivier Dufour-Coursol, and Mathieu Lacasse and Lorenz Schwojer also went 2-0 on Friday.
St. Bonaventure faces Roberts Wesleyan at 1 p.m. and Niagara at 4 p.m. in singles action on Saturday. On Sunday, players will compete for singles and doubles championships starting at 10 a.m.
