ANNAPLOIS, Md. – The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team kicked off the fall tennis season in fine fashion Friday as the Bonnies picked up four victories in seven matches against Temple in the Navy Blue Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy Courts.
Seniors Oscar Yanez (pictured) and Luis Guevara and junior Javier Ortiz each posted singles wins, while Yanez and Guevara combined for a doubles triumph for the Bonnies against the Atlantic 10 rival Owls.
No team scoring is being kept at the tournament. However, individual players are competing for flight championships in the three-day event that also includes host Navy and Delaware.
Each of the Bonnies three singles winners battled back after dropping their first sets. Yanez rebounded against Kristian Marquart for a 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) win at second singles; Yanez defeated Nicolas Paulas 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) at third singles; and Ortiz downed Hichman Belkssir 6-7. 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) at fourth singles.
Playing at first doubles, Yanez and Guevara dispatched Paulas and Kacper Rams 8-5.
The Bonnies return to action at the Navy Blue Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday against Navy and close the tournament at 9 a.m. Sunday against Delaware.
