Men's Tennis Faces Matches Against Virginia Tech, Bucknell

The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team is back in action for a pair of matches this weekend.

The Bonnies (2-1) face one of its most challenging opponents of the season at Virginia Tech (4-2) on Friday before returning home to meet Bucknell (1-2) on Sunday. The match against the Hokies is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center, while the Bison visit for an 11 a.m. start at the SBU Fitness Center.

The Bonnies are coming off a 4-3 home victory over Colgate last weekend.

Virginia Tech is ranked No. 46 nationally by the ITA and unbeaten in four matches at home. The Hokies suffered Losses to No. 37 Northwestern and No. 46 Middle Tennessee by 4-3 scores on the road, but recovered with recent victories over Coastal Carolina and Penn State.

St. Bonaventure's top doubles team of Luis Guevara and Oscar Yanez will test their abilities against Virginia Tech's talented duo of Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini, who have combined for a 9-4 record and No. 11 ITA national ranking.

The tandem of Guevara and Yanez, both seniors, is 8-4 on the year and unbeaten in two matches this spring. As a team, the Bonnies have forged a 7-1 doubles mark this spring, with juniors Javier Ortiz and Elliot Fanshel also undefeated in two matches.

In singles play, both Guevara and Ortiz have won each of their three spring matches. Ortiz, who owns a 6-5 record, has prevailed in his last four singles matches dating back to the fall season. Guevara leads SBU with a 7-6 record.

Bjerrehus and Contini  are also top singles players for the Hokies. Bjerrehus is 18-5 and ranked 44th nationally, while Contini is 16-4 and tied for 65th in the national rankings.

Bucknell is scheduled to face Niagara at the SBU Fitness Center on Saturday before meeting the Bonnies on Sunday. Both the Bison and Bonnies have defeated St. Franics (Pa.) by 5-2 scores this spring. Bucknell's losses have come to Duquesne, 6-1, and Carnegie Mellon, 5-4.

Following this weekend, St. Bonaventure stays home for an Atlantic 10 meeting against Duquesne at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22.
