PHILADELPHIA – Five of St. Bonaventure's players accounted for both singles and doubles victories on Friday as the Bonnies rolled to a 6-1 victory over La Salle in Atlantic 10 men's tennis action.
St. Bonaventure (5-10, 1-2 Atlantic 10) started the day by sweeping each of the three doubles matches. The senior duo of Oscar Yanez and Luis Guevara kicked things off with a victory over De'Sean Fennell and Trevor Donovan at first doubles, while juniors Elliot Fanshel and Javier Ortiz partnered for a win over Chas Berenato and Joseph LaBate at second doubles and sophomore Trevor Haskell and freshman Gabriel Cardenas added a triumph over Hunter Selman Thomas MacLeod in the third match.
The Bonnies then won all but one of the six singles matches against the Explorers (7-5), with Fanshel, Yanez, Guevara and Ortiz prevailing in the first through fourth spots, respectively, and Haskell earning a win from the sixth position. La Salle's lone point came from Dale Fetterman, who topped Cardenas at fifth singles.
Coupled with their double victories in Thursday's 4-3 loss at Fordham, Guevara and Ortiz now have both singles and doubles wins in back-to- back matches. Ortiz leads SBU with 12 singles victories, while Guevara is second with 11.
The tandem of Guevara and Ortiz improved its team-best mark to 14-9 on the year in doubles play with a second straight win. The partnerships of Fanshel and Ortiz (8-5 together) and Haskell and Cardenas (4-4 together) have also won consecutive doubles matches by virtue of their victories against Fordham on Thursday and La Salle on Friday.
The Bonnies finish their three-match Atlantic 10 road trip on Saturday with a 10 a.m. match at Saint Joseph's.
