Fanshel Wins Twice In Men's Tennis Loss To Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA – Junior Elliot Fanshel registered St. Bonaventure's lone singles victory and also contributed to a doubles triumph during the Bonnies' 5-2 Atlantic 10 men's tennis loss to Saint Joseph's on Saturday.

Fanshel outlasted Alex Veronis in three sets at first singles, 6-3, 1-6 (10-5), and partnered with classmate Javier Ortiz for another close victory, 9-8 (5), over Tommy Gates and Andres Urrea at second doubles.

St. Bonaventure's only other win came from the senior duo of Luis Guevara and Oscar Yanez, who bested Dan Barrus and Jeff Kessler, 8-5, in the first doubles match.

SBU's top two doubles tandems have now each won three straight matches as Guevara and Yanez improved to 15-9 on the year and Fanshel and Ortiz moved to 9-5. Additionally, Fanshel's singles victory was his second in a row and eighth of the season.

In the other singles matches, Yanez, Guevara, sophomore Trevor Haskell and freshman Celso de Vera Rehberger were each defeated in straight sets. Haskell and freshman Gabriel Cardenas suffered an 8-2 defeat at third doubles.

The loss drops the Bonnies to 5-11 overall and 1-3 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Hawks improve to 6-7 and 2-2 in conference.
