ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team closes its regular season schedule with a matchup against Atlantic 10 power Xavier at 4 p.m. Saturday at the SBU Fitness Center.
The Musketeers boast a 17-4 overall record, and they are unbeaten in six conference matches. The Bonnies, meanwhile, are 5-12 overall, 1-3 in the A-10 and are aiming to return to the win column before competing in the Atlantic 10 Championships April 25-28 in Mason, Ohio.
Since a 5-2 victory at La Salle, St. Bonaventure has lost its last two matches on the road against Saint Joseph's and Niagara. Xavier has dominated SBU of late, with victories over the Bonnies the last three years by 7-0, 6-1 and 5-2 scores.
This season, the Musketeers have registered 10 team victories by shutout and are 8-3 in road matches. The Bonnies are 4-4 at home.
Led by the foursome of Zach Mueck (26-8), Mesa Mei (26-9), Brandon MacDonald (25-8), Adam Krull (25-10), Xavier players are 170-74 collectively in singles matches. The doubles teams of Mei and Jimmy Roebker (16-5 together) and Patrick Bandy and Phillip Diaz (16-4) have helped the Musketeers to a 70-26 doubles mark.
Paced by the tandems of Luis Guevara and Oscar Yanez and Elliot Fanshel and Javier Ortiz, the Bonnies have forged a 40-38 record in doubles play. Guevara and Yanez lead the team with a 15-10 mark, while Fanshel and Ortiz have moved to 10-5 behind a current four-match winning streak.
Ortiz tops SBU with 12 singles wins, while Guevara and Yanez are tied for second on the club with 11 individual victories.
