Men's Tennis Aims To Snap Niagara's Win Streak In Little 3 Matchup

LEWISTON, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team will aim to snap Niagara's seven-match winning streak when the Little 3 rivals square off at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Bonnies outplayed the Purple Eagles when players from both teams met in the SBU Fall Classic in late September. St. Bonaventure took nine of 13 singles matches and won four of seven doubles matches against Niagara during the tournament that did not count team scores.

The Purple Eagles have been playing well of late, however, and haven't lost since suffering a 4-1 loss at George Mason on March 6. They are 11-6 overall and 6-2 at home.

The Bonnies, meanwhile, are coming off a three-match Atlantic road trip that resulted in a victory at La Salle that was sandwiched by losses to Fordham and Saint Joseph's. Bona is 5-11 overall and 1-6 on the road.

SBU and Niagara have had seven common opponents this year. Both squads have defeated St. Francis (Pa.) and Siena, while losing to Bucknell, Duquesne and NJIT. Where the results differ is against Robert Morris (SBU lost and NU won) and IPFW (SBU won and NU lost).

Led by Olivier Dufour-Coursol (18-6), David Raymond (16-8) and Lorezn Schwojer (14-5), the Purples have forged an 87-53 mark in singles play. They are 43-26 in doubles matches, paced by Dufour-Coursol and Raymond's 11-6 record together.

Junior Javier Ortiz (12-12) and seniors Luis Guevara (11-15) and Oscar Yanez (10-15) have been St. Bonaventure's top singles players throughout much the season. The Bonnies have fared well of late in doubles matches as the duos of Yanez and Guevara (15-9 together) and Ortiz and classmate Elliot Fanshel (9-5) both have won three consecutive matches heading into Sunday's competition.

After facing Niagara, SBU finishes the regular season at home against Xavier on Saturday, April 13 before competing in the Atlantic 10 Championships April 25-28 in Mason, Ohio.
