LEWISTON, N.Y. – Senior Oscar Yanez earned the lone point for the St. Bonaventure men's tennis team in its 6-1 loss at Niagara on Sunday night.
Yanez (pictured) outlasted David Raymond in three sets, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 10-8, to claim victory at second singles for the Bonnies (5-12). The win moved Yanez to 11-15 on the season.
SBU's second doubles team of juniors Javier Ortiz and Elliot Fanshel also prevailed, but the Purple Eagles won the other two matches to pick up the doubles point. Ortiz and Fanshel collected their fourth straight victory together and improved to 10-5 on the year with an 8-3 triumph over Niagara's Brandon Gallegos and Lorenz Schwojer.
St. Bonaventure's top doubles team of Yanez and classmate Luis Guevara saw its three-match winning streak come to an end with an 8-2 loss to Raymond and Olivier Dufour-Coursol. Yanez and Guevara dropped to 15-10.
In other singles matches, Fanshel pushed his first position match against Michael Elortegui to three sets, but Fanshel ultimately fell, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. The rest of the Bonnies singles players were defeated in straight sets by the Purple Eagles, who improved to 12-6 with their eighth straight victory.
St. Bonaventure finishes its regular season at home against Xavier at 4 p.m. Saturday before competing in the Atlantic 10 Championships April 25-28 in Mason, Ohio.
