ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Bonnies junior Arielle Harvey tallied a career-high 22 points, but visiting George Mason proved too much as the Patriots came away with a 76-63 victory over the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team Wednesday night at the Reilly Center.
Harvey delivered her career effort on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor while senior Mariah Ruff added 17 points. Junior Mckenna Maycock gave the Bonnies a third scorer in double figures by netting 11 points in her return to the starting lineup.
Mason's 6-foot-5 graduate transfer Natalie Butler, the nation's leader in double-doubles and rebounding who joined the Patriots from UConn prior to this season, finished with her 22nd consecutive double-double after putting up 22 points and 16 rebounds.
The squads went back-and-forth during the first half with the Bonnies taking their first lead, 15-13, following a block by Danielle Migliore that led to a three in transition from Harvey with three minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
Mason (17-6, 6-3 A-10) took a one-point lead to the second period, but a three-point play from Jalisha Terry put the Bonnies back ahead, 18-16.
The Patriots took control, however, with a 15-0 run for a 31-18 advantage with 2:28 remaining before a Ruff trey ended the drought for the hosts and helped the Bonnies begin to claw back.
Back-to-back threes before the half from Maycock made the Patriots' lead just 33-27 at intermission.
A long corner two from Terry started the second half scoring for a 33-29 margin, but another quick 9-0 break from the Patriots pushed the visitors' lead back out to 42-29 at the 7:21 mark of the third.
Mason led by as much as 17 during the third, but the Bonnies got back within 10 twice during the fourth. Harvey and Maycock combined for a trio of shots from long range to cut within 64-54 with five minutes remaining, forcing Mason to call for time.
After the timeout, the Bonnies got a defensive stop, but were unable to cut the deficit to single digits before a 3-pointer from Sarah Kaminski pushed the score to 67-54.
Bona got within 10 again following a right wing three by Ruff, 69-59, with 3:27 to play. Again the Patriots had a quick answer to snuff out the rally, though, as Butler posted a layup and the Bonnies would not get any closer.
For the game, the Bonnies hit a season-high 13 3s – five from Ruff, four from Harvey, three from Maycock and one from Migliore. The Bonnies shot 40 percent from the floor in all (23-for-57) while the Patriots logged 43 percent of their shots (29-66).
Mason freshman guard Nicole Cardano-Hillary, the A-10's leading scorer, was able to post 13 points, but was never in rhythm against the Bona defense as she finished 6-for-21 from the floor.
The Bonnies are back in action at home Sunday afternoon, hosting George Washington at 1 p.m.
