The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team wraps up a stretch of three games in five days with a matchup on the road against George Mason Sunday, Jan. 23 at EagleBank Arena. Tip is slated for 12:00 p.m. and will be aired nationally on CBS Sports Network.
OPENING TIP
- The Bonnies are coming off a 77-70 loss against Saint Joseph's Friday despite having four players in double figures. Bona's also shot a season-high 49.2 percent from the floor.
- Asianae Johnson tallied a team-best 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. I'yanna Lops posted a career-high 18 points while Tori Harris and Maddie Dziezgowski each added 11 tallies.
- The Bonnies are slated to play on National TV for the first time since Jan. 19, 2020 when they battled La Salle at Tom Gola Arena, falling 67-61.
BONNIES BITS
- Johnson has been on a tear in recent games, scoring 20 or more points in three consecutive games. In those three contests, the Brooklyn native is averaging 24.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 52.5 percent from the floor in 36.3 minutes per. She now has seven career games of 20 points or more.
- The senior guard currently ranks fifth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring (16.9 ppg), fifth in free throw percentage (74.2 percent) and is ninth in assists (3.3 apg). Johnson also ranks sixth in the A-10 and is second among guards in field goal percentage, shooting 44.9 percent from the field.
- With her block against Saint Joseph's, I'yanna Lops moved into sole possession of 11th on the Bonnies single season block list with 28. The junior forward ranks third in the A-10 in blocks and blocks per game (1.8).
SERIES HISTORY
· St. Bonaventure and George Mason meet for the 12th time Sunday. The Bonnies hold the edge in the all-time series, 6-5, and have won the last four contests between the schools. The teams met last season in Fairfax, with the Bonnies coming out on top, 72-62, which snapped a 24-game road losing skid.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS
· George Mason enters Sunday's contest with an overall record of 6-10 and are 0-4 to begin Atlantic 10 play. The Patriots have lost seven straight games since taking down Florida, Dec. 1, 75-71. George Mason also has victories this year over FIU (69-67), Loyola (MD) (53-51), Charleston Southern (64-55), Bowling Green (77-75) and Navy (69-64). The Patriots were picked to finish 14th in this year's Atlantic 10 preseason poll.
· Vanessa Blair-Lewis was named the ninth coach in George Mason women's basketball history prior to this season. Blair-Lewis joins the Patriots after a 13-year stint at Bethune-Cookman where she led the Wildcats to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2019. She was a four-time MEAC Coach of the Year winner and tallied nearly 200 victories.
· The Patriots are paced by Amaya Scott who leads the team in scoring and rebounding. Scott ranks third in the Atlantic 10 in scoring (17.6 ppg) and is seventh in rebounding (7.1 rpg). Jordan Wakefield also averages double figures for George Mason, chipping in 13.0 points per contest.
