The Oakland Golden Grizzlies hit four clutch free throws in the final 30 seconds of the game to seal a 76-72 victory over the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Center O'Rena.
The Golden Grizzlies improve to 4-2 following the win, while the Bonnies four-game winning streak to start the season is over as the team falls to 4-1
Dana Mitchell tallied at least 20 points for the third straight game, netting 24 points on the day, while Katelyn Murray poured in 20 points of her own to go along with four rebounds in the loss. Andrea Doneth played well for the Bonnies in her home state, chipping in five points while corralling six rebounds and handing out a team-high six assists.
Murray put the Bonnies out in front early at 11-6 by drilling back-to-back three-pointers with 14:27 remaining in the first half.
Oakland would respond with a 10-0 run, highlighted by back-to back Jessica Pike triples to put the Golden Grizzlies up 16-11.
Another Murray trifecta would bring the Bonnies within two at 22-20 with 6:36 remaining in the first half.
Oakland would begin to pull away from the Bonnies using a 12-7 run to increase their lead to 34-27 after an April Kidd lay-up.
The Brown and White would respond on the defensive end, however, as they would hold the Golden Grizzlies scoreless for the remaining two minutes of the first stanza.
The Bonnies clawed their way back thanks to a Jessica Jenkins three-pointer and a Mitchell lay-up to put the Brown and White up 36-34 going into half.
Murray had 13 points in the first half on the strength of three-of-four shooting from downtown.
Oakland came out on fire to start the second half going on a 12-3 run capped off by a Pike lay-up to put the Golden Grizzlies up 46-39.
The Bonnies would tie the game back up at 52 all on a Murray jumper with 8:24 remaining.
The Brown and White would eventually take the lead at 64-63 on a three-pointer by Cara Gustafson with 4:19 to go.
The Grizzlies would take back the lead right back in this see-saw affair, which had 10 lead changes and nine ties, at 72-70 with one minute remaining in the game.
Another Mitchell lay-in would bring the Brown and White within two, 74-72, with 17 seconds left in the game.
After an intentional foul by the Bonnies, April Kidd made one-of-two free throws to put Oakland up three, 75-72.
A last ditch straight-away three-pointer by Andrea Doneth was off the mark and the Golden Grizzlies controlled the rebound and hung on for the victory.
The Brown and White shot 39.7 percent (23-58) from the field and 76 percent (19-25) from the line for the game. Oak land shot 43.9 percent (25-57) from the field and an incredible 89 percent (23-26) from the charity stripe for the game.
Oakland was led by Pike who poured in 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, while teammate Melissa Jeltema netted 22 on a 10-for-10 showing from the free throw line for the game.
The Brown and White return to action on Tuesday evening as they welcome IPFW to the Reilly Center for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
