ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -
A collective effort on the offensive end and solid foul shooting late lifted the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team to a 69-58 win over Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Tuesday evening at the Reilly Center.
The Bonnies were able to bounce back against the Mastodons after suffering their first loss of the season last time out against Oakland, 76-72. With the win tonight, the Brown and White have now won seven straight non-conference games at the Reilly Center.
"We knew we'd have to gut it out and do things well enough to keep them from getting into a rhythm" Crowley said. "While there are very many things we can improve on, I was proud of the way we found a way to get a victory even with something not going our way like we'd hope."
St. Bonaventure improves to 5-1 with tonight's victory, while IPFW falls to 1-5 on the season.
Junior Andrea Doneth led four Bonnies who scored in double figures, pouring in a season-high 17 points while grabbing eight rebounds.
Dana Mitchell, who tallied 15 points, had her streak of 20 point games stopped at four.
The Bonnies jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, holding the Mastodons scoreless for the first five minutes of the game. A reverse lay-in by Courtney Reed put IPFW on the board at 10-2 with 14:52 remaining in the first half.
A Doneth lay-up put the Bonnies up 12-4 with 13:51 remaining. Turnovers would keep the game close moving through the middle of the first half, however, as the Brown and White coughed the ball up on six of their next seven possessions.
Freshman Megan Van Tatenhove's old-fashion three-point play seemed to wake up the home team, putting the Bonnies up 17-10. Back-to-back three-pointers by Erica Schiefen and Cara Gustafson would extend the Bona lead up to 23-10 with 5:26 to go in the half.
IPFW would hit back-to-back trifecta's to bring the visitor's within seven, 31-24, going into half.
The Bonnies had a balanced scoring attack in the half with five players scoring at least four points.
The Brown and White would receive another old-fashion three-point play, this time by Katelyn Murray, to put the Bonnies up 10 at 34-24 coming out of intermission.
A straight-away three-pointer by Chelsey Jackson brought the Mastodons within five at 38-33 with 14:56 left in the game. Another trifeca from the Mastodons, this time by Reed trimmed the Bona lead down to 45-43.
Doneth would answer right back for the Brown and White with back-to-back three-pointers on consecutive possessions to push the Bonnie lead back up to 52-43 with 8:15 to go in the game.
IPFW would not go away, however, as they rattled off seven straight points capped by a Jackson jumper to pull within two at 52-50.
After a Murray lay-up to make the score 54-50, Eva Ivanova made two free-throws for IPFW to bring the visitor's within two once again at 54-52 with 3:13 remaining.
That would be as close as the Mastodons would get the rest of the game.
The Bonnies would finish the game on a 15-6 run. The Brown and White did most of their damage during the run from the charity stripe as they received 12 made free-throws from a multitude of players in the last three minutes of the game to put IPFW away.
The Brown and White shot 39.2 percent (20-51) from the field and 75 percent (24-32) from the line for the game. IPFW shot 36.4 percent (22-55) from the field and 28 percent (7-25) from three-point land for the game.
IPFW was led by Jordan Zuppe who had 13 points on 4-of-13 shooting from the field, while Reed chipped in 11 points and three assists.
The Brown and White return to action on Sunday as they welcome Big Ten power and 21st-ranked Michigan State to the Reilly Center for a 12:00 noon tip-off.
