SMITHFIELD, R.I. -
Behind a balanced offensive attack that saw five Bonnies reach double figures in scoring, the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team captured a 67-58 victory over Bryant University on Friday afternoon at the Chace Athletic Center.
Senior Priscilla Edwards and freshman Armelia Horton led the way for St. Bonaventure, scoring 11 points each. Senior Katelyn Murray, freshman Megan Van Tatenhove and junior Andrea Doneth were the other three Bonnies in double figures, scoring 10 points apiece in the win.
Four of the Bonnies that scored in double figures came off the bench which played a huge role in today's victory. The St. Bonaventure bench outscored Bryant's bench 41-14, and for the season have now outscored its counterparts in 13 of 14 games.
St. Bonaventure moves to 10-4 with the victory, while Bryant drops to 4-8 on the season after the loss.
The Bonnies got out to a fast start, as they opened the game on a 10-3 run capped off by a Doneth three-pointer. Bryant would quickly close the gap at 12-9 after a lay-in by Jamie Campbell.
The lead would stay with the Brown and White, as St. Bonaventure would go on an 8-0 run capped off by an old-fashion three-point play by Van Tatenhove to put St. Bonaventure up 20-9 with 11:20 remaining in the first half.
Once again, however, just when it looked like the Bonnies were going to pull away, Bryant would have an answer to keep the game close. Shannon Wood hit an off balance three-pointer to bring Bryant within six, at 23-17.
Van Tatenhove would not let Bryant gain any more momentum, converting another old-fashion three-point play to put the Brown and White up 31-24 with 4:22 left in the first half. The Bona lead would swell into double digits after Priscilla Edwards hit a three-pointer. St. Bonaventure would maintain its lead and head into half with a 38-25 advantage.
A jumper by Murray would put St. Bonaventure ahead 42-31. Back-to-back buckets by Horton would extend the Brown and White's lead up to 48-33 with 12:33 remaining in the game.
St. Bonaventure could simply not put Bryant away, however, as the Bulldogs came storming back. A three-pointer by Lindsey Hudspeth would cut the Bona lead down to 11, at 52-41. Back-to-back three-pointers, on the Bulldogs next two possessions, by Kelsey O'Keefe would bring Bryant the closest it had been since it was 11-5 at the 14:53 mark in the first half.
The Brown and White would not let Bryant any closer, as a jumper by Doneth would extend the Bonnies lead back up to 10, at 62-52, with 2:32 remaining in the game.
Bryant would hit a jumper on its next possession to stay in it, but Doneth would come up large again for St. Bonaventure hitting a three-pointer to put the Brown and White up 11 with only 55 seconds left in the game to seal up the win.
The Bulldogs were led by Kelsey O'Keefe, who poured in a game-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 shooting from the three-point line.
The Brown and White will continue on their season long four-day road trip as they travel to New Haven Conn. to take on Yale University in the John J. Lee Amphitheater for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
