WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — With 14 teams separated
by just 10 strokes heading into the final round, St. Bonaventure
made good on its opportunity to climb the leader board in
Tuesday's final round as it moved up eight spots to finish in
a tie for eighth place at the 22-team C & F Bank
Intercollegiate hosted by William and Mary at Kingsmill Golf
Resort.
Just one of six teams to improve their score from the first
round to the final round, the Bonnies' four-man score of 300
gave them a two-round total of 602, good enough to tie with
Connecticut for the eighth slot.
Headlining the final day push was senior Nathan
Peck, who carded the lowest round of the day out of the
120-player field with a two-under par 69. The Tecumseh, Ontario
native's final round 69 coupled with his opening round 73
helped him finish in a tie for fourth place overall.
Like all the Bonnies, Peck began his final round on the back
nine and jumped out of the gates with a three-under 32 on the back.
Peck then finished his final nine holes with a 37 to complete his
round of 69. Peck carded eight of the team's 18 birdies over
the two rounds and ranked tied for second amongst the field in that
category. Peck also ranked among the leaders in par 4 scoring (+2)
and par 5 scoring (-2).
“I was proud of the team for battling and making a push
today like we knew we could,” said head coach Andy Whalen.
“Obviously, Nate's round had a lot to do with that and
it's a great way for him to start out the spring season.
Overall, I'm very pleased how each guy played and I'm
most impressed with our ability to improve on the final day because
that's something this program has prided itself on over my
time as a player and coach.”
Also aiding the final round jump was junior Chris
Stoddard (pictured), who bounced back from a 79 on day one
with a three-over par 74 on Tuesday. Stoddard's five stroke
improvement helped him move into a tie for 55th. Junior
Kristopher Boyes followed his opening round 73
with a 79 to finish one stroke better than Stoddard in
43rd position. Boyes finished in a tie for the
tournament lead in par 5 scoring at four-under par.
Graduate student Andy Fretthold turned in the
team's third-best score of the day with a 78 for a two-day
total of 157. Freshman Kevin Lewis finished the
tournament with a 77-84/161.
St. Bonaventure will be back in action on Saturday, April 3 when
it opens play in the adidas Hoosier Invitational hosted by Indiana
University. The tournament will be played at Indiana University
Golf Course in Bloomington.
