STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Darkness may have
postponed the end of Saturday's second round, but it
didn't stop St. Bonaventure from posting the top score over
the day's second 18 holes as it jumped from ninth place into
a tie for fourth heading into Sunday's final round of the
Penn State Rutherford Intercollegiate.
The Brown and White's four-man score of 297 in the second
round was a 12 stroke improvement on their first round 309. St.
Bonaventure entered the second round in a three-way tie for
12th and their 297 was the second-best score over first
two rounds.
Host Penn State (590), who turned in a 291 in the first round,
is currently in first place. Ohio (597) sits seven strokes back,
while Towson (602) is in third place.
For the second straight round, the Bonnies played the Blue
Course's par 5s at two-under par and currently lead the
14-team field in par 5 scoring (-4). St. Bonaventure's
biggest improvement in the second round came on the par 4s where
they improved by 15 strokes from the first (+22) to the second
round (+7).
Senior Nathan Peck jumped 11 spots in the
individual standings to a three-way tie for fifth place with a
one-over par 72 in the second round. Peck carded four birdies for
the second straight round to lead the field in birdies (8) through
the first day. The Tecumseh, Ontario products rounds of 75-72/147
were team-bests in both rounds.
A pair of eagles sparked a two-over par 73 from graduate student
Andrew Fretthold and freshman Kevin Lewis. Fretthold's rounds of 78-73/151 put him a tie
for 17th place overall. Lewis' 73 is his best
score since the opening-round of the spring season at the Treasure
Coast Classic. Lewis ranks second amongst the field in par 5
scoring at three-under par. Junior Kristopher Boyes turned in the final score of the second round with
his second consecutive 79.
The third and final round will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
