Golf in sixth place after first day at A-10s

Peck tied for ninth in individual standings

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — The St. Bonaventure golf team opened play at the Atlantic 10 Championships with a team score of 309 to sit in sole possession of sixth place after the first round at Mission Inn Resort.

The Brown and White's 309 on the par-71, 6,887-yard course featured nine birdies. Just three teams broke 300 led by Charlotte's four-over par 288. The 49ers were led by defending champion Chris Nagy's four-under par 68.

“I thought we battled today and that's important on the first day because everyone is nervous,” said head coach Andy Whalen. “We need to cut down on the big numbers that we put up on certain holes because that's what really hurt us. Overall, not a bad start, but we're anxious to do better tomorrow.”

With the momentum of two recent A-10 Player of the Week awards behind him, senior Nathan Peck began his quest for All-Conference status with an opening round three-over par 74 to sit in a six-way tie for ninth place. Peck carded four birdies on the day, including three over his final six holes.

Juniors Kristopher Boyes and Chris Stoddard turned in six-over par 77s on the day. Boyes' scorecard featured three birdies on the back nine, but unfortunately just eight pars for the entire round. Stoddard's afternoon was much more consistent, as he produced a team-best 13 pars. Getting the first A-10 Championship experience of his career, freshman Kevin Lewis turned in an 81, while graduate student Andrew Fretthold shot 83.

Round two of the 54-hole tournament will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning. For complete coverage of the 2010 Atlantic 10 Golf  Championship, including live scoring, log on to www.atlantic10.com
