WINTER HAVEN, Fla. ─ The St. Bonaventure baseball team lost both games in a weekend doubleheader to the Georgetown Hoyas 12-7 Saturday and 5-3 Sunday at Winter Haven, Fla.
The Hoyas scored first on Sunday with a run in the bottom of the second inning.
The Bonnies put up all their runs in the top of the third. Junior outfielder Eric Jutca and junior first baseman Austin Ingraham scored on a RBI triple by junior third baseman Billy Urban. Urban reached home on a single by senior left fielder Nick Brennen.
Georgetown built their lead with a run in the top of the sixth and three runs in the top of the eighth.
Junior Jason Radwan pitched seven and two thirds innings for St. Bonaventure, recording eight strikeouts, hitting three batters and allowing three hits, five earned runs and six walks. Freshman righty Zachary Edwards recorded the last out of the top of the eighth.
On Saturday, the Bonnies opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with Urban reaching home following an error by Georgetown's pitcher.
Georgetown responded in the top of the third with three runs. Jutca brought the score to within one in the bottom of the third, scoring on an error by the Georgetown shortstop.
The Hoyas scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth. Senior right fielder Ryan Skellie reached home on an RBI by junior Nick Lohrer in the bottom of the fourth.
Georgetown increased their lead in the top of the fifth inning on a homerun. St. Bonaventure tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as Urban scored on a wild pitch and Brennen reached home on an RBI by Skellie.
The Hoyas put up four runs in the top of the seventh, including a homerun. The Bonnies drew closer in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles scoring Brennen and Skellie hit by Skellie and Lohrer respectively. Georgetown concluded the game's scoring in the top of the eighth with three runs.
Skellie lead the Bonnies at the plate, going to two for four with two RBI.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Asa Johnson started for St. Bonaventure, throwing for five innings with a strikeout, allowing five runs on six hits and giving up five earned runs and four walks. Brennen pitched two and a third of an inning with five strikeouts, allowing three hits and an earned run.
Edwards threw for an inning, allowing three hits, two earned runs and a walk. Urban pitched two thirds of an inning, recording a strikeout and giving up two walks, an earned run and one hit.
The Bonnies will conclude their season-opening trip to Florida when they face Northeastern at 11 a.m. Monday. The Huskies are 3-2 this season. Junior lefty Eddie Gray is expected to take the mound for St. Bonaventure.
