INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The St. Bonaventure women's basketball team (9-16, 2-8) struggled mightily on the offensive end in the second half, allowing Butler (15-10, 6-4) to run away with the 64-46 victory.
Ashley Zahn dropped 12 points on 4-4 shooting from long range to lead the Bonnies in this one. All of which came in the first half.
The Brown and White trailed by as many as seven in the first half but battled back to tie it, or so they thought, with an Ortega triple. The score was later changed to a deuce following a review. Butler took a 25-22 lead on a pair of free throws and with just seconds remaining in the half Zahn came off of a screen and drained the game-tying triple. The Bonnies played tough defense in the closing seconds to keep the score tied heading into the locker room.
Butler came out firing in the second half, jumping ahead to a 36-27 lead by the 17:10 mark. The Bonnies could not find the bottom of the net, going the first 8:24 of the second half without a field goal. Doris Ortega tossed in a couple free throws but that was it for the Bonnies scoring to that point.
The Brown and White never saw the lead creep back inside of 10 from that point on as Butler shot an impressive 7 of 12 from long range in the second frame.
Daress McClung of Butler led all scorers with 17 points and nine rebounds. Liz Stratman and Mandy McDivitt each tossed in 12 of their own to help Butler to its 15th win of the season.
The only other Bonaventure player to reach double-figures was Doris Ortega who finished with 10. Katie Healy's string of double-digit performances came to an end with just nine points. Emily Michael tossed in six on 2-6 from long range.
The Bonnies will be at home on Thursday when they welcome nationally ranked Dayton for a rematch of last season's Atlantic 10 Championship game. The Flyers stole victory from the perfect Bonnies to claim the Atlantic 10 Tournament title.
