The Short Story:
St. Bonaventure's second half comeback comes up short as it falls to the Toledo Rockets on Thursday, Nov. 20 by a score of 64-58. Junior forward Hannah Little led the Bonnies with 12 points, while Gabby Richmond had eight rebounds. Kelcie Rombach set a career-high with 11 points, including a career-high three three-point field goals made.
Foul trouble and slow start plagued the Bonnies in the first half. Junior forward Katie Healy recorded two fouls after 11 minutes of play and sat out of the rest of the half. St. Bonaventure struggled from the field in the first shooting just 7-27 (25.9%) and 0-8 from behind the arc.
The Brown and White trailed for more than half of the game, but in the second half, SBU knocked down four-straight three-point field goals to give itself their first lead since the 6:40 mark in the first half. The lead wouldn't last for the Bonnies as the Rockets went on a 13-2 run to close out the game. Nine of the 13 points for Toledo were from the free-throw line.
Toledo's physical play earned them 28 trips to the free-throw line, while St. Bonaventure only visited the line just eight times. The Rockets converted 25 points from the charity stripe.
How It Happened:
- Both teams were slow out of the gate as at the first media timeout, the score was 0-0.
- At the 16:24 mark, Richmond received the pass into the low post and scored, but not before the 30-second shot clock went off.
- Mariah Ruff finished the half for the Bonnies by driving hard to the basket and converted on a contested lay-up and also drew the foul. Ruff went on to complete the three-point play.
- To begin the second half, Katie Healy made a nice pass under the basket that went to Hannah Little for the easy lay-up.
- At the 13:40 mark, Richmond was called on a technical foul that gave Rockets two shots from the line and the ball. Toledo converted both free-throws.
- In just a three-minute span, St. Bonaventure went on a 14-5 run, which included four three-point field goals from Rombach and Ruff. Healy added two from the free-thrown line.
- Rockets hit a lay-up with a little more than five minutes left that put them ahead by one. Toledo never looked back and went on to score 11 straight points.
- Emily Michael capped the game off with a heave with just two seconds left on the clock from 10 feet behind the three-point arc and swished it.
Beyond the Box Score:
- After Healy committed her second foul of the game and sat out for the rest of the first half, SBU was outscored 22-11.
- Despite shooting 0-8 from beyond the arc in the first half, St. Bonaventure notched seven three-point field goals in the second half going 7-14 (50.0%).
- Toledo held the advantage on the boards, 42-34.
- 24 of the Brown and White's 58 points came from inside the paint.
- The SBU bench provided 21 points, including 11 from Rombach and eight from Ruff.
- The last time Healy attempted four shots or less in a game was her freshman year against Temple on Jan. 13, 2013.
- Emily Michael led St. Bona with three steals and three assists.
- Gabby Richmond is still in the hunt for her first double-double of her career. Richmond had eight points and eight boards.
- Entering the second half of today's game, St. Bonaventure was 0-30 from three.
