OPENING TIP OVERVIEW
St. Bonaventure brings a 12-game winning streak into its Atlantic 10 matchup with UMass on Sunday afternoon. The Bonnies also look to keep their unblemished home record alive, posting wins in their first nine games of the year at the Reilly Center.
Sunday's game marks a re-match of last year's Atlantic 10 Tournament first round game where the Minutewomen ended St. Bonaventure's season with a 55-49 decision. The contest will be broadcast live to affiliates around the nation on the American Sports Network.
At 2-0 in conference play, St. Bonaventure is one of just three Atlantic 10 squads to have an unblemished A-10 record through two games along with Duquesne and George Washington.
ABOUT UMASS
- The Minutewomen come to St. Bonaventure looking for their first Atlantic 10 victory after home losses to VCU (74-66) and Saint Joseph's (62-58) in the opening week of conference play following a 6-6 record in non-conference action.
- Massachusetts ranks in the middle of the A-10 in scoring at 64.6 points per game, but 13th of the 14 teams in scoring defense, allowing 66.7 points per game to opponents.- Sophomore guard Cierra Dillard, a Rochester native, leads the way at 13.2 points per game including three games of 20+ points. Freshman guard Bria Stallworth (12.6 ppg) has earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week three times on the year.
- Senior Rashida Timbilla is a force on the boards, leading the team with 9.2 rebounds per game a mark that stands second in the A-10 behind only George Washington's Jonquel Jones. Timbilla finished last year averaging 9.4 rebounds, one of two A-10 players to average over nine rebounds per game along with Jones.
- UMass averages just 3.9 three-pointers per game, led by Dillard's 21.
THE BONA-UMASS SERIES
UMass leads the all-time series with the Bonnies, 31-25. The Minutewomen won the last meeting, 55-49, at the Atlantic 10 Championship last March, but St. Bonaventure had gotten the best of the series in recent years prior to that matchup. The UMass win last March snapped what was an eight-game Bonnies winning streak dating to 2009 including a pair of regular season victories a year ago - 77-57 on the road on Jan. 31, 2015, and a 65-54 triumph at the RC on Jan. 3, 2015.
In the A-10 Tournament game last year, Katie Healy led SBU with 15 points and eight rebounds while Cierra Dillard posted 10 points for UMass. In the last meeting at the Reilly Center, Healy led all scorers with 25 points as well as nine rebounds while Mariah Ruff also had 10 points for SBU.
BONNIES LOCKING DOWN ON DEFENSE
- In last Sunday's win at Rhode Island, URI shot 38.2 percent for the game. That's the only time in the last nine games that an opponent has shot better than 35 percent against the Bona defense.
- For the season, opponents are shooting 33.3 percent against the SBU defense. That total ranks first in the Atlantic 10 and 11th in the nation.
- The Bonnies are holding opponents to 24.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc - that total ranks third in the A-10 and 12th in the nation.
- Opposing teams are averaging 53.8 points per game against the Bona defense - among A-10 teams, only VCU ranks ahead (52.9 ppg). SBU ranks 25th in the nation in scoring defense.
- Bona has held opponents to single digits in a quarter 13 different times this season.
- SBU is averaging 4.7 blocks per game, ranking fifth in the A-10.
- Opponents have scored 59 points or less 10 times this season including eight out of the last nine games.
- The SBU defense has held opponents under 40 percent shooting from the floor in 12 of 15 games this season. The Bonnies are 11-1 in those games.
- Opponents shot just 36.2 percent against the St. Bonaventure defense last year. Among A-10 teams, only George Washington (36.1 percent) held opponents to a lower field goal percentage.
HEALY RISING THROUGH THE RECORD BOOKS
Senior Katie Healy is one of four SBU players all-time to net 1,400 points with over 700 rebounds, joining Sue Shay (1,874 points and 952 rebounds), Missy Ward (1,578 points and 856 rebounds) and Dana Mitchell (2,011 points and 706 rebounds).
- Healy is SBU's active leader in scoring (1,445), rebounds (721), assists (217), blocks (130) and steals (118).
- Healy ranks seventh all-time in Bonnies scoring with 1,445 career points (second among all active A-10 players).
RUETER CLOSING IN ON 1,000 POINTS
Senior Nyla Rueter enters Sunday's game with 992 career points, needing just eight points to become the 21st player in Bonnies women's basketball history to reach 1,000.
With 156 career 3-pointers, Rueter is seventh in program history. She needs one more to tie Roni Hergenroeder's 157 (1987-91) for sixth. Rueter ranks third all-time in SBU free throw percentage at 84.3 percent - only Trisha Raniewicz (87.9 percent - 1999-2001) and Jessica Jenkins (86.9 percent, 2008-12) rank higher.
GAME STORYLINES
What to watch for in Sunday's game:
- Nyla Rueter needs eight points to reach 1,000 for her SBU career. She would become the 21st player in Bonnies history to reach the milestone. Rueter also needs two three-pointers to take over sixth place in Bonnies history.
- Katie Healy (1,445 points) needs nine points to pass Megan Van Tatenhove (2008-12) for sixth place all-time in SBU scoring. Healy passed current assistant coach Jessica Jenkins (1,441) for seventh on Thursday.
- On the second-longest winning streak in program history (12), St. Bonaventure has also opened the season with its longest home winning streak to begin a year in the program's Division I era (9-0).
- The Bonnies are seeking their first 3-0 start in Atlantic 10 play since the 2011-12 season, the only time in program history that SBU has won its first three A-10 games.St. Bonaventure's 13-2 record also equals that 2011-12 squad, which ultimately reached the Sweet 16, for the best start in the program's Division I era (beginning in 1986-87).
- A win Sunday would tie head coach Jim Crowley with former Temple coach Dawn Staley for seventh all-time in Atlantic 10 career victories among all coaches (99).
- The Bonnies were out-rebounded, 34-29, on Thursday vs. Fordham. SBU had won the battle of the boards in the previous six games. Also Thursday, St. Bonaventure failed to crack 40 percent shooting from the floor for just the second time this year, snapping a streak of 11 straight games of 40 percent or better.
- The Bonnies women have combined with the SBU men for the best start in Bonnies basketball history at 24-5 (women's team 13-2, men's team 11-3). The previous best start through a 29-game combined period was 2011-12 - 21-8 (women's team - 13-2, men's team 8-6). Both teams reached the NCAA Tournament that season.
BONNIES ON THE ESPN.COM BRACKETOLOGY BOARD
The Bonnies' strong non-conference play and start to the Atlantic 10 schedule has earned Bona some national recognition. In the latest edition of Charlie Creme's Bracketology on ESPN.com, Creme has listed the Bonnies as being on the cusp of an NCAA Tournament bid, listing the Brown and White as one of his "next four out." He has the A-10 getting two bids - George Washington and Duquesne.
