LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – For the second time in 24 hours, the St. Bonaventure University golf team was victorious – this time taking the crown at the first edition of the Murray Cup by defeating Siena head-to-head, 11-5.
One day removed from taking the team title at the Binghamton Intercollegiate in a field of 17 teams, the Bonnies were quickly back in action Tuesday at Schuyler Meadows Club outside the state capital. The Murray Cup was played under hybrid match play/stroke play 18-hole scoring with eight player pairings each offering two points for 16 points total. One point was awarded per pairing to whomever shot the lowest score while another point was awarded for the player winning the most holes in that pairing.
Five Bonnies won both available points in their pairings – junior Matt Abendroth was in a three-way tie for the low score on the day with a 76, taking both points from Siena opponent Jack Downey. Along with Abendroth, sophomores Nolan Ditcher, who also carded a 76, and Zach Chaddock as well as junior Brent Morgan and freshman Danny Gianniny each grabbed two points for the Bonnies.
Senior Corey Long also scored one point by shooting a 76 as compared to opponent Jack Brown's 78, though Brown won more holes to halve the match.
The Cup is named for two ardent supporters of both schools' golf programs, 1968 St. Bonaventure graduate Ed Murray and Siena trustee John Murray. While the two Murrays are not related, they share a passion for the game of golf and their universities.
With the victory, the Bonnies capture the Murray Cup and will be in possession of the prize until next year.
After a very busy and successful stretch of three events in the past week, the Bonnies are off until Oct. 19 when they travel to Niagara Falls Country Club to take on rivals Canisius and Niagara in the Little Three Championship.
