ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Junior Joshua Pulla's two goals was not enough as the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team fell in overtime to George Washington, 4-3, in Saturday's regular season finale at the Marra Athletics Complex.
Oscar Haynes Brown found the back of the net for the fourth time just two minutes into the first overtime period, sending George Washington home winners in a must win game for both teams to have a chance at the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
The Bonnies were able to force the overtime period when Francesco Caorsi found Pulla in behind the defense with 45 seconds remaining in regulation. Pulla composed himself and slotted home the tying goal to make it 3-3 just before time expired. Caorsi was credited with his team-leading sixth assist on the play.
The Bonnies went to intermission with a 2-1 lead.
The Colonials (5-10-2, 3-4-1 A-10) jumped out to an early lead when Haynes Brown scored in the 11th minute, pulling ahead 1-0.
Bona's was quick to respond when Pulla curled in a shot from the top of the box in the 24th minute after C.J. Takatch forced a GW turnover, tying the game 1-1.
Just minutes later, Vardar put the Bonnies on top, 2-1, with his first goal of the season in the 30th minute.
George Washington tied the game, 2-2, in the 48th minute when Haynes Brown converted a penalty kick.
Haynes Brown completed his hat trick in the 61st minute, giving GW a 3-2 edge.
Trevor Wilson got the start in net for the Bonnies, making five saves. Pulla finishes the year with seven goals, the highest mark by a Bonnies player since Kosi Nwafornso scored nine goals in 2018.
The Bonnies finish the year with a record of 4-10-1 and 3-5 in Atlantic 10 play.
Saturday's loss eliminated the Bonnies from playoff contention.
