NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – St. Bonaventure's Danny Gianniny has added another award to his extensive Bonnies resume with a selection to the Atlantic 10 Golf All-Academic Team, conference officials announced Wednesday.
Already an Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team and PING All-Region honoree, Gianniny earned a spot on the five-man All-Academic squad along with Brian Garrett and Viraj Garewal of Davidson, Chris Francoeur of Rhode Island and Lou Baker of Richmond.
Gianniny graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in business administration and a cumulative GPA of 3.203. To be nominated, golfers must have a GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) for their entire academic career. The teams were selected through voting conducted by the league's Sports Information Directors. He plans on returning to the program for a fifth season this fall.
The Pittsford, N.Y. native is the first Bonnies golfer selected to the conference All-Academic Team since Patrick Sheerer in 2017 and the first SBU student-athlete picked to both the A-10 golf All-Conference and All-Academic teams since Brennan Payne did so in both 2008 and 2009.
In a spring-only season, Gianniny shined for the Bonnies. He posted a stroke average of 72.6 over 13 rounds across six events, including three rounds in the 60s and five rounds of 70 or lower. During the year, he logged three top-five finishes and four top-10s and did not finish outside the top-25 in any event.
He finished the season playing at his best. He helped the Bonnies to a victory over rivals Canisius and Niagara by finishing tied for fourth in the Little Three Championship, then earned back-to-back second-place finishes in the Lafayette Collegiate and the Upstate Spring Escape. At Lafayette, he played The Steel Club in 3-under 139 (70-69), matching his own career-best 36-hole total and ranking fourth-lowest in program history. In the next event at the Upstate Spring Escape, he helped the Bonnies to victory over Rhode Island and Colgate. He played Seven Oaks Golf Club in a career-best 5-under 67 which was one off the program record for a low round and best by a Bonnies player since 2018-19. He finished the year with a tie for 25th at the Atlantic 10 Championship at Orlando's Reunion Resort (76-74-74).
