ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Asianae Johnson's season-high 20 points were not enough as the St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team dropped a 50-47 decision to Davidson Wednesday night at the Reilly Center.
Johnson finished 10-for-17 from the floor on the way to her game-high 20 points. She added four rebounds and a pair of steals on the night.
Davidson (10-3, 1-0 A-10) led for the majority of the night, but the Bonnies fought back to exchange the lead with the Wildcats eight times, mostly down the stretch.
The two teams traded free throws to begin the final quarter with the Wildcats finally getting the first basket of the fourth thanks to Suzi-Rose Deegan with 6:03 remaining for a 37-34 edge.
With 2:16 to play, Johnson stepped into a jump shot from the top of the key and drained it, tying the score at 39-39.
Following a Davidson score, Tianna Johnson found a wide open Maddie Dziezgowski in front of the Bona bench and she found nothing but net on a three-point attempt, giving the Bonnies a 42-41 lead late in the fourth.
Davidson would retake the lead, but Asianae Johnson made a clutch jumper from just inside the three-point line for a 46-45 edge.
On the following possession, Elle Sutphin found Cameron Tabor open beyond the arc and she did not miss, giving Davidson a 48-46 lead with just 14 seconds to play.
After a Bonnies timeout, Lops was fouled but was only able to convert 1-of-2 from the line, leaving the Bonnies down one, 48-47, with just 3.5 seconds on the clock.
Bona tried to foul, but Davidson ran out the clock to earn the road victory.
The Bonnies (8-6, 0-3 A-10) were able to pull within two, 25-23, just after halftime but Davidson held serve, extending its lead back to six, 32-26, with three minutes left in the third quarter following an Elle Sutphin fast break score.
Bona's got two baskets from Johnson and another from I'yanna Lops to tie the score 32-32 at the end of the three periods.
It was all Wildcats to start the game as they jumped out to an early double-digit first quarter lead.
Davidson shot 47.1 percent (8-for-17) from the floor in the first period to take a 17-7 lead after one.
The Bonnies, however, opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run, holding Davidson scoreless for the first 6:19 of the period to pull within one, 17-16.
The Wildcats responded with a 6-0 run of their own, eventually growing its advantage to 25-18, heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Bonnies are back in action Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Reilly Center when they host George Washington at 12:00 p.m.
