PITTSBURGH – The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team dropped Thursday night's season-finale at Duquesne, 2-1.
It was tale of two halves.
The first half of the game was fairly even between the Bonnies and the Dukes, resulting in a scoreless first period.
However, Duquesne would go on the attack in the second half, possessing the ball for most of the final 45 minutes of play.
The Dukes (6-5-3, 4-2-3 A-10) netted the first score of the night in the 52
nd minute when a corner kick caromed off a group of players and found the foot of Margey Brown, who deposited the ball into the right corner of the net to take the lead.
In the 75
th minute, Duquesne extended their advantage when a loose ball bounced around and Brooke Kirstein sent it off the foot of a Bonnies' defender into the back of the net.
The Bonnies cut the deficit to one score after freshman
Hannah Walker dished out a beautiful cross to senior
Rachel Hutchison for her second goal of the season. The helper marked the second assist of the season for Walker.
St. Bonaventure had two good chances to net a score in the first 45 minutes of play.
In the 26
th minute, sophomore
McKenna Robinson dribbled past a defender and fired a shot that was saved by the Dukes' goalkeeper.
Cristina Torres used her body to settle the ball in the 28
th minute, striking the ball toward the net which caused Duquesne's goalkeeper to make a diving save.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Chiara Gottinger set a new career-high with 15 saves in Thursday's contest, trumping her old career-high of 14 that she tallied against Richmond in the Bonnies last game.
The reigning Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week concludes the year third in the record book for most saves in season with 163. On Thursday, she passed Betsy Pawlik (1985), Brooke Lang (1989), and Karen Cunningham (2001) to move from sixth to third on the list.
Her 163 stops place her first in the nation in total saves among all Division I goalkeepers. Thursday's contest marks the eighth game of the season in which she has recorded 10 or more saves.
Gottinger has now accumulated 282 total saves in two seasons with the Brown and White, which puts her fifth in Bonnies history for career saves.
Duquesne earned a key three points in its hunt for an Atlantic 10 Tournament berth.
The Bonnies finished the year with a 3-8-6 overall record and a record of 1-8-1 in conference play.
