Bonnies Roar Back For 11-10 Win at Cleveland State

SBU wins third straight behind four goals from Jackson Rose

CLEVELAND – On a day where momentum would swing back and forth again and again, it would be the Bonnies who seized the game's final run by scoring the last three goals to shock Cleveland State as St. Bonaventure captured a come-from-behind 11-10 victory Sunday afternoon.

The Bonnies outscored the Vikings by a 5-2 margin in the final quarter and struck for the tying and game-winning tallies in the last 3:10 of the day.

The winning score came with 1:57 to play as Jake Rosa worked behind the cage, delivering a feed to Jackson Rose who came through with his fourth goal of the day to complete a weekend home-and-home sweep over CSU.

Bona trailed, 10-8, with under nine minutes to play when Sean Westley and Austin Blumbergs connected for a goal to bring the visitors within one.

Blumbergs deposited his second goal of the afternoon with 3:10 remaining, off an assist from Zach Owens, to even the score at 10-all.

That set the stage for Rosa and Rose who combined for seven goals on the day as Rosa also registered a hat trick of his own.

With the win, the Bonnies finish non-conference play at 5-2 and with a three-game winning streak as MAAC action begins next weekend.

Both teams made three-goal runs in a rollercoaster first half.

Cian Collins gave the Bonnies an early lead by scoring unassisted less than 90 seconds in, but Cleveland State would run off the next three tallies for a 3-1 advantage late in the first quarter.

St. Bonaventure would quickly level the score, though, as Rose and Rosa scored just 22 seconds apart for a 3-3 draw with 2:34 left in the first period.

The Bonnies would continue their run by grabbing the lead back on the power play as Rosa scored his second goal of the day 20 seconds into the second quarter for a 4-3 score.

Cleveland State (1-5) grabbed the momentum back, however, by rolling on another 3-0 run for a 6-4 lead with under three minutes to play in the opening half. Rose would find the back of the net just 25 seconds before intermission to cut Bona's deficit to only one at halftime.

The Bonnies had multiple chances to draw even as the third quarter began, peppering the Cleveland State net with shots, but Vikings goalie Cameron Logan made several impressive saves to maintain their advantage.

Amiri Austin gave CSU breathing room with his tally at the 9:17 mark of the third, but the Bonnies would finally break through five and a half minutes later as Anthony Cimino delivered a great pass behind the net to an open Rose who completed another hat trick, his fifth of the season.

The Vikings would close the third quarter scoring to take a two-goal cushion with 15 minutes left.

An offsides call against the hosts would set the table for the Bonnies to get right back within one as Kyle Pepper connected for an 8-7 score and Rose brought the score even with a tying tally with 12:30 to go.

Unfortunately for the Bonnies, that would set off another momentum swing as the Vikings broke the tie on a strike from Gannon Matthews with 10:40 on the clock, won the ensuing faceoff and immediately scored again to lead by two once more.

After the Bonnies roared back, the drama lasted until the final seconds as a slashing penalty against SBU gave Cleveland State a power play opportunity with nine seconds to go. A Vikings turnover as time expired ended the threat.

Brett Dobson again impressed in the cage, making 14 saves for the Bonnies while Logan turned away 13 shots for the Vikings.

St. Bonaventure travels to play at Marist as MAAC action begins Saturday at 1 p.m.

GAME NOTES
  • The Bonnies defeated Cleveland State, 12-5, in the opening half of the unique home-and-home series Friday and now leads the all-time series 2-1 after avenging a 2019 loss in the CSU bubble.
  • Rosa finished the day with four points.
  • Rose scored seven goals in the weekend series against the Vikings while Blumbergs posted six goals this weekend.
  • Bona's has its second three-game winning streak in program history, matching a run last year. The Bonnies have already evened last year's five-win total as well.
  • SBU is now 3-1 in games decided by only one goal this year. The Bonnies have scored one-goal thrillers over Bellarmine, VMI and Cleveland State after a 12-11 heartbreaker at Saint Joseph's to begin the year. Since last year, the Bonnies are 5-4 in contests decided by two goals or less.
  • Dobson made 33 saves in the two wins this weekend.
  • CSU held a 51-38 edge in shots, but the Bonnies led in shots placed on goal, 25-24. St. Bonaventure was 23-for-25 in clear attempts while holding the Vikings to 16-20 and CSU won 15 faceoffs to Bona's nine.
  • The Bonnies penalty kill went 5-for-5, denying five Cleveland State extra man opportunities.
