MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The St. Bonaventure University baseball team dropped an 11-1 decision to Alabama State to begin a three-game set on the road Friday evening.
The Hornets (4-7) jumped ahead early with three runs in the bottom of the first, taking control of Friday's series opener.
Alabama State tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third when Hunter May blasted a three-run home run to left-center.
The Bonnies (0-6) pulled one back on a passed ball, scoring Pierce Hendershot in the top of the fourth, but it was not enough to spark a Bonnies rally.
The Hornets added an insurance run to make it 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth before scoring four in the six to earn the victory.
Liam Devine got the ball to start, working 4.0 innings and surrendering seven runs. Rushil Bhat (1.0 IP), Jacob Yager (2.0 IP, five hits) and Jagger Nucci (1.0 IP, one strikeout) all tossed in relief for the Bonnies.
Thomas Grilli, Brendyn Stillman, Matthew Williams and Ben Berger all registered singles for the Brown and White.
The Bonnies and the Hornets wrap up their three-game set with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
