2022 Bonnies Choice Awards Nominees Announced

The 2022 Bonnies Choice Awards are set - and will return to an in-person setting this spring. The awards show will take place Tuesday, May 3 in the Reilly Center at 7 p.m.

The awards show celebrates the accomplishments of St. Bonaventure student-athletes during the past academic year.

Nominations were cast by members of the St. Bonaventure Student-Athlete Advisory Committee along with coaches and voting was open to all St. Bonaventure student-athletes. Listed below are the finalists for each award.

In addition, the traditional senior awards will also be presented at this year's Bonnies Choice Awards.

Rookie of the Year - Best athletic performance for first-year student

Rising Star - Underclassman with high hopes for future athletic success 

Breakthrough Performer - Student-athlete who had significant improvement in athletic success/outstanding athletic performance 

Courage Award - Student-athlete who has overcome adversity to achieve athletic success

Unsung Hero Award - Student-athlete who works hard, does a lot behind the scenes, might not get much playing time, but significantly contributes to their team

Reilly Award - Student-athlete that embodies what it means to be a Bonnie

International Student-Athlete of the Year

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Osun Osunniyi, Basketball – Pleasantville, N.J.

  • Named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year for second consecutive season
  • Set SBU career blocks record (305)
  • 9.9 ppg, 8.1 rpg; 1,100 career points
Brett Dobson, Lacrosse – Oshawa, Ontario
  • Seven-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Week this season
  • National leader in save percentage (.671)
  • Top-five nationally in saves per game (17) and goals against average (8.74)
Christian Chapman, Golf – Victor, N.Y.
  • Best fall scoring average in school history (71.0)
  • Set program records for low round (65), low-54 hole total (205) and best score vs. par in a 54-hole tournament (-11)
  • Five top-five finishes

 
Womens Athlete of the Year

WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Cristina Torres, Soccer – San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • Helped the Bonnies to a 7-8-4 record overall and 5-4-1 in Atlantic 10, earning a berth in the A-10 Tournament for the first time since 2013
  • Earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team honors after leading the A-10 in goals (13) and was second in points (26)
  • Also earned Atlantic 10 All-Academic honors as well as CoSIDA Academic All-District Accolades
Asianae Johnson, Basketball – Brooklyn, N.Y.
  • Two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference honoree, including Second Team honors following the 2021-22 season
  • Led the Bonnies and the Atlantic 10 in scoring, averaging 18.1 points per game and scored 20 or more points in 10 games
  • Set the program record with eight straight games of 20 or more points
  • Finished ninth all-time in scoring (1,444 points), seventh in made free throws (339), seventh in double-figure scoring performances (78), 11th in blocks (51) and 11th in field goal percentage (45 percent)
Rachel Kimmel, Swimming – Fort Loudon, Pa.
  • Three-time Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week and also was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team
  • Won 18 events during senior season, including a silver medal in the 100-breaststroke at the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championships
  • Finished her career with the program record in the 100-breaststroke, 200-breaststroke and 200-medley relay

 
Womens Rookie of the Year

WOMEN'S ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Chiara Gottinger, Soccer – Pirching am Traubenberg, Austria
  • Earned Atlantic 10 Second Team goalkeeper honors as well as All-Rookie Team honors
  • Led the Atlantic 10 and was sixth in the NCAA with 119 saves. Also led the A-10 in minutes played (1811:03) and saves per game (6.26)
  • Ranked third in the A-10 with six shutouts
Olivia Ippolito, Cross Country/Track – Orchard Park, N.Y.
  • Placed in the top-7 in every cross country event during the fall season
  • Ran two top-10 indoor track program times
Fiona McGovern, Lacrosse – Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.
  • Second on the team in goal with 13 and is fifth on the team with 16 points
  • Scored a career-high six goals during a game earlier this season at George Washington
Bridget Kennedy, Soccer/Track – Cleveland Heights, Ohio
  • Played every minute on the defensive back line during first season with the soccer program, helping the Bonnies to six shutouts and an A-10 Tournament spot
  • Set the SBU indoor track program records in the 200m and 400m races and the outdoor 200m

Matthew Wrobel, Soccer - Missassauga, Ontario
  • Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team
  • Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week
  • Second on the team with five goals and 12 points
Trent Grainger, Lacrosse - San Diego, Ca.
  • Three-time MAAC Faceoff Specialist of the Week
  • MAAC Rookie of the Week
  • Ranks second in MAAC faceoff win percentage (.542)
Zyad Morsy, Diving - Cairo, Egypt
  • Atlantic 10 Diver of the Year
  • Gold medals in 1-meter and 3-meter dive at A-10 Championships
  • Broke school record that had stood since 2012 in the 1-meter dive
Clay Peets, Cross Country / Track - Akron, Ohio 
  • Three-time A-10 Rookie of the Week (program record) 
  • Top-5 program times in XC 5K and 8K
  • Ranks first in SBU outdoor 3000 meters and second in SBU outdoor 5000 meters

WOMEN'S RISING STAR
Olivia Moon, Softball – Perry, Ohio
  • Has started 32 out of 37 games played this season, leading the team in batting average (.287), hits (29), RBIs (17) and doubles (8)
  • Raised batting average 200 points from last season
Kassi Hogan, Lacrosse – Guelph, Ontario
  • Became a key contributor during sophomore season; did not register a point as a freshman and improved to ranking fourth on the team with 17 points this season
  • Tied for second on the Bonnies with 13 goals and added four assists
McKenna Robinson, Soccer – Connoquenessing, Pa.
  • Played in all 19 games, making 10 starts during sophomore season.
  • Led the Bonnies in assists with four and added two goals for eight points
  • Netted a goal in the Bonnies Atlantic 10 quarterfinal matchup at UMass

Zach Buckner, Cross Country / Track - Fairview, Pa.
  • Set five SBU track records this spring
  • Owns Bona's outdoor records in 800 meters and 5000 meters; indoor records in 800 and 5000 as well as 4000-meter distance medley relay
Jean Marrero, Tennis - Bayamon, Puerto Rico 
  • Took over No. 2 spot in lineup this year
  • 7 singles wins, 9 doubles wins during the season
Alexander Behr, Swimming - Letzendorf, Germany 
  • Two top-five finishes at A-10 Championships and three top-10s
  • Five individual wins during duel meet season

WOMEN'S BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMER

Amanda Baird, Diving – Henderson, Nev.
  • Won a pair of bronze medals in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives at Atlantic 10 Championships
  • Grabbed six individual victories during the regular meet season after transferring from Northern Michigan in January
Ally Haskell, Softball – Franklinville, N.Y.
  • Leads Bonnies pitching staff with a 3.36 ERA in 89.2 innings of work this season
  • Dropped over two runs off her ERA from her junior season in 2021
  • Has a career-high 58 strikeouts on the year
I'yanna Lops, Basketball – Stamford, Conn.
  • Averaged 8.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in 28 contests last season after scoring 7.2 points and grabbing 4.4 rebounds a season ago
  • Set the second-highest single-season blocks total in Bonnies program history with 44 rejections and ranks seventh all-time on the career blocks list with 61
  • Scored in double figures 11 times, including a pair of double-doubles

  • Raised batting average 100 points, team's top hitter at .310
  • Starting catcher in all 26 games played

Jackson Rose, Lacrosse - Lakeway, Texas
  • Set program record with 31 goals
  • Leads all MAAC players in goals this year
  • Ranks second nationally in shot percentage
Jalen Adaway, Basketball - Logansport, Ind. 
  • First Team All-Atlantic 10 and First Team USBWA All-District
  • 1,000-point career scorer
  • +3 ppg over last season, averaging 15.3 ppg

 
Womens International Athlete of the Year

WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Silvana Cabrera, Swimming – Lima, Peru
  • Earned a ninth-place finish in the 200 butterfly finals at the Atlantic 10 Championships while also setting three personal best times
  • Won seven individual events during the dual meet season
  • Represented her home country of Peru in the 2021 Junior Pan American Games
Abby Hiltz, Lacrosse – Peterborough, Ontario
  • Led the Bonnies with 37 points and 22 assists while ranking second on the team with 15 goals
  • Registered multiple-goal performances in five contests, including a hat trick vs. Saint Joseph's
  • Played in all 15 games, making 14 starts

  • Plays at No. 1 singles

WOMEN'S UNSUNG HERO

Claire Schaef, Swimming – West Richland, Wash.
  • Placed fifth in the 1650-freestyle at the A-10 Classic with a time of 18:20.09
  • Swam a time 10:53.70 in the 1000-freestyle at Canisius to pick up a victory
  • Earned three victories at Niagara in the 1000-freestyle (10:39.81), the 200-freestyle (1:57.76), and the 500-freestyle (5:15.11)
Maddie Dziezgowski, Basketball – Bethel Park, Pa.
  • Averaged 6.3 points in 23 minutes per game 
  • Second on the team with 39 three-pointers made
Emily Lewandowski, Softball – East Aurora, N.Y.
  • Started 28 of 29 games played
  • Drove in two runs in a win at Buffalo (4/26)

 
Mens Unsung Hero

MEN'S UNSUNG HERO

John Pullano, Cross Country/Track – Penfield, N.Y.
  • Ran a personal best time of 17:01.7 in the 5K at the Little Three Championship
  • Registered a personal-best mile time of 4:48.13 at the Highlander Invitational
Jake Ruffolo, Swimming – Niagara Falls, N.Y.
  • At the Atlantic 10 Championships was a member of the 800-freestyle relay team that won a silver medal (6:34.41).
  • Placed sixth in the 100-freestyle with a time of 45.38 at the A-10 Championships.
  • A part of the A-10 Championships 400-freestyle relay team that placed fourth with a time of 3:00.04.
Cody Shimp, Baseball – Williamsport, Pa.
  • Returned this season after dealing with injury, throwing scoreless innings against Rhode Island (4/8) and Davidson (4/15).
  • So far this year he has recorded seven strikeouts in six innings.

WOMEN'S REILLY AWARD

Caroline Paterno, Women's Lacrosse – State College, Pa.
  • Named a team captain for the 2022 season
  • Serves as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee while taking part in many volunteer efforts to support the campus and surrounding communities
Morgan Brady, Women's Cross Country/Track – Fairport, N.Y.
  • Four-year member of the Bonnies program
  • Competed in each cross country and track event of the season
Emerson Graham, Women's Swimming – Waxhaw, N.C.
  • Placed fifth in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:31.41 at Cornell
  • Picked up a second-place finish at Canisius in the 200-breaststroke (2:32.13)
  • At the Atlantic 10 Championships finished in the consolation final with a time of 2:20.37 in the 200-breaststroke

Brian Gleason, Cross Country/Track – Hamburg, N.Y.
  • Returned from injuries/illness to score during the team's cross country season
  • Ran a personal-best 5K time of 16:32.24 at the Little Three Championship and 8K time of 27:23.4 at the Anderson Invitational
Christian Szablewski, Baseball – Lancaster, N.Y.
  • Fought cancer diagnosis earlier this season to return to play
  • Recorded a two-RBI double at Canisius (4/26)
