ORLANDO, Fla. – Luke Young's win at No. 6 singles clinched a 4-2 victory for the St. Bonaventure men's tennis team over George Mason Thursday morning in the first round of the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championships at the USTA National Campus.
A sophomore from Waterloo, Ontario, Young took down Erick Rivas in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, sending the Bonnies to victory.
Stijn Paardekooper and William Schneideman also came up with clutch wins in singles play. Paardekooper bested Rishab Sardana at the top flight, 6-4, 6-1, while Schneideman was victorious at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, over Herman Jentoft.
The Brown and White took momentum early on Thursday, earning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Paardekooper paired up with Marco Rivolo for a 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot while Jean Marrero and Norka Sanchez won, 6-4, at No. 3.
Thursday marked the first Bonnies win at the Atlantic 10 Championships since 2010.
The Bonnies advance to Friday's quarterfinals where they will take on top-seeded VCU at 9:00 a.m.
