Bonnies Hang On For 48-47 Victory Over Loyola Chicago

CHICAGO – The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team fought off a fourth quarter comeback from Loyola Chicago to defeat the Ramblers, 48-47, Saturday afternoon at Gentile Arena.

Breauna Ware finished with 12 points to lead the Bonnies while Maddie Dziezgowski and Nikki Oppenheimer each added 11 tallies.

Bona's led by 16 heading into the fourth but the Ramblers were able to battle back to 46-42, holding the Bonnies without a basket for over four minutes.

Ware's layup with 1:36 showing on the clock pushed the Brown and White's lead back to six but Loyola was able to pull within one possession with under 30 seconds remaining in the game. 

The Ramblers had a chance to win at the buzzer, but Sam Galanopoulos shot did not fall, giving the Bonnies the road victory.

The Bonnies shot 42.9 percent from the floor, including a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter while five different players logged points.

The visitors closed the quarter on a 13-0 run, taking a 17-9 advantage after one.

Defense was the name of the game in the second frame with both team suffering a five-minute scoring drought with the Bonnies leading, 20-13.

Ware snapped the drought with a steal and fast break score to kickstart a quick, 5-0 spurt to pull ahead, 25-13.

Maya Chandler made back-to-back baskets for the Ramblers to pull within seven at the break, 25-18.

The Bonnies came out of halftime shooting with Dziezgowski making a pair of triples early in the third as part of a 14-2 run to take a 39-24 lead.

Bona's held the hosts without a field goal for the final five-plus minutes of the third quarter to take a 42-26 advantage into the final frame.

GAME NOTES

  • The Bonnies finished the contest shooting 40.0 percent (16-for-40) from the field and held Loyola to 26.2 percent (16-for-61) from the floor.
  • Bona's won the rebounding battle over the Ramblers, 38-33.
  • The Bonnies blocked a season-high 11 shots. I'yanna Lops paced the Brown and White with four rejections.
