Bonnies Fall To Canisius In Tuesday Doubleheader

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University baseball team fell in both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Little Three rival Canisius Tuesday afternoon at Handler Park.

Game 1 – Canisius 6, St. Bonaventure 3 (7 innings)
Freshman Chris Hoalcraft kicked off the scoring for the Bonnies in the bottom of the second inning with his first collegiate home run over the wall in left field.

Following an Artin Biageyian double, the Bonnies added another run in the second thanks to an RBI single from Adam Rankie.

Canisius answered right back in the top of the third inning, scoring five runs on five hits. The big blow was a three-run home run from Dylan Vincent to take a 5-2 lead.

The Bonnies got a run back in the bottom of the third when Pierce Hendershot stole home on a designed first and third play.

The Golden Griffins' relievers shut down the Bonnies offense to secure the game one victory, 6-3.

Senior Kyle Caringi surrendered one run on two hits in two innings out of the bullpen, while Noah Czajkowski pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

At the plate for St. Bonaventure, Jack Putney recorded two hits.

Game 2 – Canisius 10, St. Bonaventure 4 (7 innings)
Canisius struck first with an RBI groundout from Max Grant to take a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Griffins tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to complete the line of St. Bonaventure starter Andrew Ayers.

Ayers threw four innings, scattering four hits and only allowing one earned run.

Canisius added three runs in the top of the fifth with the exclamation point being a two-run homer from pinch hitter Carlin Dick.

St. Bonaventure cut the deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back RBI singles from Adam Rankie and Jack Putney. Thomas Grilli capped the inning off with a run batted in on a hit by pitch.

However, the Golden Griffins' worked out of a bases loaded jam without surrendering any more runs to remain ahead by three.

Canisius extended its lead with a run in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Bonnies made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh, tallying a walk and a single from Jackson DeJohn and Danny Manion. Grilli knocked in DeJohn to make it a 10-4 game, but the Bonnies comeback attempt would fall short as Canisius claimed its second victory of the day.

Artin Biageyian and Danny Manion each finished with two at the dish for the Bonnies.

The Golden Griffins' picked up two hits and a run batted in from Josh Niles.

The Bonnies remain at home a for a three-game series against Rhode Island, beginning on Friday, April 14. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
