BUFFALO, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University baseball team dropped a midweek non-conference doubleheader at Canisius Tuesday evening, falling in a pair of heartbreakers as the Griffs took a two-run decision in game one before holding off the Bonnies by a single tally in the nightcap.
Â
Game 1 – Canisius 9, St. Bonaventure 7
Christian Szablewski got the Bonnies on the board first in the top of the second with an opposite field homer for his fifth long ball of the season.
Â
Canisius responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs to take a 4-1 lead.
Â
The Bonnies strung together some two out hits to retake the lead in the top of the third.
Â
Szablewski once again knocked in a run, this time with an RBI single to score
Kyle Caccamise who reached on a walk to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Â
Freshman
Evan Dieter capped off the inning with a two-run double to knot the score up at four apiece.
Â
In the next inning,
Adam Rankie drove in
Aaron Herbst to help the Bonnies go back on top, 5-4.
Â
However, the Golden Griffins plated three runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth to grab a 9-5 advantage.
Â
The Bonnies made things interesting in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run for
Jackson DeJohn.
Â
St. Bonaventure brought the tying run to the plate, but Brett Kochanski worked out of the jam to secure a 9-7 victory in game one of the doubleheader.
Â
Szablewski and DeJohn each finished with two hits and two RBIs at the plate for the Bonnies.
Â
Canisius was led in game one by Ryan Weiss's three hits, while Mike DeStefano drove in three runs.
Â
Game 2 – Canisius 3, St. Bonaventure 2
The Bonnies had the tying run in scoring position in their final at-bat, but fell just short in the second game of the day.
A two-out bases loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth inning drawn by Cole Sebastian would prove to plate the game-winning run as the Golden Griffins claimed a 3-2 victory in game two.
Â
The Golden Griffins opened up the game with two runs in the bottom of the first.
Â
Pierce Hendershot responded for the Bonnies in the top of the second with a two-run homer to tie the game at two.
Â
This was all that St. Bonaventure could push across as three Canisius relievers gave up no hits in five scoreless innings pitched.
Â
Freshman
Bobby Finn made a solid first collegiate start for the Bonnies, throwing 3.2 innings with three hits and three strikeouts. After the Griffs scored twice in the first, Finn put up zeroes in the next two innings before Canisius loaded the bases in the fourth and a walk pushed across the deciding tally.
Â
Out of the bullpen,
Kyle Caringi tossed 1.2 innings, allowing no hits and striking out one.
In the seventh,
Jackson DeJohn pinch hit and drew a walk, and a second free pass worked by
Aaron Herbst put the tying run into scoring position. Canisius reliever Peyton Consigli was able to pick up a strikeout to end the game, however, and earn his third save.
Â
The Bonnies return home for a three-game conference series against UMass beginning on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
