2023 Bonnies Choice Awards Finalists Announced

The 2023 Bonnies Choice Awards finalists have been officially announced. The awards show will take place Monday, May 1 in the Reilly Center at 6 p.m.

The awards show celebrates the accomplishments of St. Bonaventure student-athletes during the past academic year.

Nominations were cast by members of the St. Bonaventure Student-Athlete Advisory Committee along with coaches and voting was open to all St. Bonaventure student-athletes. Listed below are the finalists for each award.

In addition, the traditional senior awards will also be presented at this year's Bonnies Choice Awards.

2023 Bonnies Choice Award Categories
Rookie of the Year - Best athletic performance by a first-year student
Rising Star - Underclassman with high hopes for future athletic success 
Breakthrough Performer - Student-athlete who had significant improvement in athletic success/outstanding athletic performance 
Courage Award - Student-athlete who has overcome adversity to achieve athletic success
Unsung Hero Award - Student-athlete who works hard, does a lot behind the scenes, might not get much playing time, but significantly contributes to their team
Reilly Award - Student-athlete that embodies what it means to be a Bonnie
International Student-Athlete of the Year
Athlete of the Year - The top male and female student-athletes from the past year

2023 Men's Athlete of the Year finalists

Daryl Banks III, Basketball
  • Atlantic 10 All-Conference Third Team selection
  • Ranked ninth out of all A-10 players for scoring during the regular season at 15.4 ppg
  • Ranked fourth in the A-10 during the regular season with 79 3-pointers
  • National minutes leader
     
Maxwell Murray, Swimming
  • Touched the wall in a time of 4:22.92 in the 500-freestyle to earn a silver medal and set a new program record at the 2023 A-10 Championships
  • Broke a school record that had stood for over 25 years in the mile at A-10 Championships with a time of 15:27.81 to earn a bronze medal
  • Set a school and pool record in the 1000-freestyle with a time of 9:16.31, breaking the mark posted by George Eversmann when he swam a time of 9:28.08 in 1997
 
Jackson DeJohn, Baseball
  • Leads the team with 22 runs batted in and six home runs
  • Fourth on the team with a .295 batting average
  • Second on the team with a slugging percentage of .492


Women's Athlete of the Year finalists

Chiara Gottinger, Soccer
  • Led all of NCAA Division I with 163 total saves
  • Finished the season as the Atlantic 10 leader and stood second in the nation in saves per game (9.59)
  • Led all A-10 goalkeepers in save percentage (.881)
Silvana Cabrera, Swimming
  • Set a new program record in the 200-butterfly with a time of 1:59.70 for a fourth-place finish on the final night of A-10 Championships
  • Finished eighth in championship final of 100-butterfly with a time of 54.58
  • Scored 10 individual event victories this season
Anastasia Gubanova, Tennis
  • Victorious five times this season at number three singles
  • Won seven matches at number four singles
  • At number one doubles, picked up 10 match victories
Emily Phelan, Softball
  • Moved into fifth place on the Bonnies all-time strikeout list with 230 career strikeouts
  • Earned nine victories in the circle this season with a 4.38 ERA
  • Has tossed two shutouts with 118 strikeouts this year, ranking fifth in A-10 strikeouts


2023 Men's Rookie of the Year finalists

Yann Farell, Basketball
  • Earned a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team after averaging 8.9 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 31 minutes per game
  • Ranked fourth among all Atlantic 10 players in 3-point percentage at 41.9% (65-155) and best among freshmen
  • Named A-10 Rookie of the Week five times, second-most in program history
 Ben Giera, Diving
  • Earned gold at A-10 Championships in the 3-meter dive
  • Finished with a score of 302.65 to notch a bronze medal in the 1-meter dive at the conference championships
  • Set a program record in the 1-meter dive with a score of 342.98
 Aiden Scattergood, Cross Country/Track
  • Stands second in the record book in the 800 meters, running a time 1:58.22 at A-10 Indoor Championships
  • A part of the 4000-meter relay team that owns the top time of 11:01.26
  • Sits eighth in the record book with a 5K cross country time of 16:16.7 at the Little Three Championship 
Quinn Nolan, Lacrosse
  • Set the program record for faceoff wins in a game by earning 19 against VMI
  • Scored three goals this season 
  • Two faceoff wins away from program record of 129


2023 Women's Rookie of the Year finalists

Ami Komori, Soccer
  • Named to the 2022 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team
  • Netted three goals and two assists
  • Finished with a team-high eight points
Isabella Venter, Tennis
  • Picked up five wins at No. 4 singles
  • At third singles, earned seven match victories
  • Notched 10 match victories at No. 1 doubles
Brooke Piper, Lacrosse
  • Recorded a team-high 38 draw controls
  • Tallied 16 goals and eight assists
  • Delivered her first collegiate hat trick at Duquesne
Mia Winters, Cross Country/Track
  • Finished in the team scoring during every cross country meet
  • Set the school track records during indoor season for the 3000-meters and outdoor season for the steeplechase
  • Ranks 11th in cross country school history for individual 5K cross country times; 5th in indoor mile


2023 Men's Rising Star finalists

Clay Peets, Cross Country/Track
  • Owns the top times in program history in cross country 5K and 8K, breaking own records four times this season
  • Set the program record in the 3000 with a time of 8:35.59 at this year's A-10 Indoor Track Championships
  • Sits second in school history with an indoor mile time of 4:20.94 at RIT; set the program's outdoor records in 3000 and 5000 meters
 Kyrell Luc, Basketball
  • Started all 32 games at point guard
  • Posted 11.3 ppg and ranked top-five among all Atlantic 10 players in assists and steals
  • Scored in double figures 23 times during the year
Jack Putney, Baseball
  • Leads team in batting average, hitting .320 with a .376 on-base percentage
  • Started 30 of 34 games this season, primarily as team's third baseman
  • Raised batting average nearly 200 points in past two seasons


2023 Women's Rising Star finalists

Fiona McGovern, Lacrosse
  • Leads the team with 63 points on 42 goals and 21 assists
  • First in the conference and fourth in the nation in free position goals per game (1.29)
  • Ranks fifth in A-10 goals and sixth in conference points
Brooke Bobbey, Softball
  • Second on the team with a .345 batting average and on-base percentage (.439)
  • Hit a team-high four triples
  • Tallied nine multi-hit games this season
Bridget Kennedy, Soccer
  • Started all 17 games, playing full time in every match as a key part of the defense
  • Scored her first collegiate goal, a game-winner, at Little Three rival Niagara
  • Helped the Bonnies record four shutouts


2023 Men's Breakthrough Performer finalists

Chad Venning, Basketball
  • Played in all 32 games, starting 29
  • Scored in double figures 24 times during the year, tying for the team lead
  • Stood third in the Atlantic 10 for blocks (46) and second in field goal percentage (58.1%)
 Erik Stauderman, Golf
  • Team captain stepped into role as one of team's top two players in his fifth year
  • Three top-10 finishes
  • 74.2 scoring average this season, two shots better than any previous season
 Christian Szablewski, Baseball
  • Earned starting job at first base after battling injuries/illness during career
  • Five home runs rank second on the team
  • .993 fielding percentage during the year


2023 Bonnies Choice Breakthrough Performer

Jessica Notaro, Lacrosse
  • Second on the team with 40 points and 35 goals
  • Ranks first in the conference and second in the nation in shot percentage (.668)
  • First in the A-10 with a .706 free position percentage
Abby Suhr, Softball
  • Leads the team with a .356 batting average and five doubles
  • Second on the team with .492 slugging percentage and 11 runs batted in
  • Smacked her first collegiate home run at Fordham
Nikki Oppenheimer, Basketball
  • Made 74 career 3-pointers
  • Led the Bonnies with a career-high 49 made threes, shooting 31.4 percent from beyond the arc
  • Scored in double figures nine times, including five out of the last seven games


2023 Men's Courage Award finalists

Davis Hutchinson, Diving
  • Returned to the diving boards this season after a potential career-ending neck injury
  • Placed 14th in the consolation final of the 1-meter dive with a score of 228.00 at the 2023 A-10 Championships (2/16)
  • Notched a sixth-place finish in the 3-meter, diving a score of 298.65 on the final day of championships
 Mark Belles, Lacrosse
  • Returned from an injury that cost him the entire 2022 season
  • Played in every game this spring and ranks third on the team in scoring
  • Posted 8 goals, 7 assists and 15 points with 16 groundballs
Jean Marrero, Tennis
  • Returned from injury to play multiple spots in the lineup and help team to 10 wins


2023 Women's Courage Awards

Lindsey Clawson, Cross Country/Track
  • A member of the 4x400 relay team that set a school record with a time of 4:32.16
  • A member of the distance medley relay team that stands second in the record book with a time of 13:27.25
  • Ran a career-best 5K time of 19:27.6 at this year's Atlantic 10 cross country championships after battling injuries
Juanita Wolak, Softball
  • Battled back from two ACL tears to earn starting role 
  • Started 32 games this season
  • Recorded three doubles and two triples
Kristin Pickard, Soccer
  • Sat out this season due to injury
  • Named to the A-10 Commissioner Honor Roll last season


2023 Men's International Athlete of the Year

Alexander Behr, Swimming
  • A member of the 200-medley team that finished fourth at the 2023 A-10 Championships with a time of 1:28.52 
  • Broke his own program record in the 100-butterfly for a fourth-place finish with a time of 47.44 on day three of championships
  • Notched a silver medal in the 200-butterfly final at championships, registering a time of 1:45.41 and now owns the top two times in program history
Archie Graham, Tennis
  • Eight singles wins during the spring semester
  • Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week
  • Helped team to a 10-9 record during regular season
 Jake Rosa, Lacrosse
  • Started all 13 games while ranking second on team in scoring
  • Posted 20 goals and 11 assists for 31 points
  • Became second player in program history to reach 100 career points
 Jules Dechert, Soccer
  • Started 10 games in net this season
  • Made 51 saves with a 1.94 goals against average


2023 Women's International Athlete of the Year finalists

Brittney Colangelo, Lacrosse
  • Leads the team with 20 caused turnovers
  • Scooped up a team-high 31 groundballs
  • Tallied her first collegiate assist at Duquesne
Kashish Bote, Tennis
  • Recorded six victories at number five singles
  • Earned three wins at six singles
  • At the second and third doubles spot, picked up five match victories
Beth Thomas, Swimming
  • Named to the 2022-23 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's Swimming and Diving Team
  • Swam a personal best time of 1:04.53 in the 100-breaststroke at championships
  • Won three individual events and was a part of a relay victory against Gannon


2023 Men's Unsung Hero finalists

Nicholas Torre, Swimming
  • Registered a sixth-place finish in the 50-freestyle with a time of 22.27 at the Colgate Invitational
  • At the Cleveland State Tri-Meet was a part of the 400-freestyle relay that recorded a time of 3:10.68 for a fourth-place finish
  • Member of the 200-freestyle relay team that placed third with a time of 1:26.51 against Cornell
 Clay Smith, Soccer
  • Started all 16 games this season on defense
  • Played 1,431 of possible 1,440 minutes during the year
Jake Biscaliuz, Baseball
  • Played 21 games including 16 starts
  • Served in utility role, playing infield and catcher


2023 Women's Unsung Hero finalists

Sylvi Jenner, Lacrosse
  • Recovering from season-ending injury last season, creates team's social media content
  • Saw action in seven contests as freshman last year
  • Scored first collegiate goal vs Saint Joseph's in 2022
Kelly Barnes, Tennis
  • Seven singles wins
  • Earned 10 match victories at third doubles
Macy Miller, Softball
  • Named to Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll last season
  • Saw action in the cirlce in two games this season
