CHARLESTON, S.C. – A five-run seventh inning erased what was a Bonaventure lead and sent The Citadel to an 8-4 victory in the rubber game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.
A day after exploding for 22 runs and the most offense by a Bonnies team in a decade, St. Bonaventure carried that momentum into Sunday with a three-run first.
Kyle Caccamise dumped a one out single to right, then stole second. After moving to third on a ground out, he scored the first run of the game on a well-placed dribbler down the third base line off the bat of Jackson DeJohn for an RBI. Two more Bona runs crossed the plate on a drive to center from Morgan Little that hopped off the glove of the centerfielder to allow a third score.
The Citadel got a run back in the first and tied it up, 3-3, on a two-run homer from cleanup batter Anthony Hausner in the third.
Bona played small ball in the fifth to break the tie, using the speed of Paul Vossen. The Bonnies centerfielder walked to leadoff the frame, then moved into scoring position after stealing second. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored following a sac fly from Caccamise for a 4-3 edge.
Vossen led off the seventh with a double down the right field line and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, but a lineout to second and a rope directly at the left fielder ended the threat and chance for insurance.
The Bulldogs rallied and broke the game open after the seventh inning stretch.
Citadel (2-1) put together four straight one-out hits and took advantage of a run-scoring wild pitch to surge ahead by three. Another run would later cross the plate and the Bulldogs were able to lock down the win with the final six outs.
David Marshall Jr. had two hits including a double while Vossen was on base three times.
Tristan Ciampa made his Bonnies debut with the start, striking out four in 3.1 innings of work. Noah Czajkowski was impressive in the middle innings before running into trouble in the seventh, tossing 3.1 frames as well. Ryan O'Connell struck out two and registered four outs without a run against him.
St. Bonaventure (1-2) next travels to play at Louisville in a three-game series starting Friday at 3 p.m.
