MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team fell to Cornell, 8-3, Sunday morning to wrap the first weekend at The Spring Games for the Bonnies.
Cornell grabbed the game's first lead in the top of the third when Sydney Stapf cleared the bases with a double to center field, giving the Big Red a 3-0 lead.
The Bonnies cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth with an Olivia Moon RBI single down the third base line.
It remained a two-run game until the seventh inning.
The Big Red posted five runs in the top of the seventh, capped off an a three-run double off the bat of Hailey Pirkey.
Bona looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh, pulling back within six when Olivia Whitecar singled home Amelia Santos who was standing on second after a leadoff double.
A few batters later, Kymora Wang singled through the right side, scoring Whitecar, but it was not enough as Cornell recorded the final out on the next batter, earning the victory.
Kennedy Haberl picked up a pair of hits for the Brown and White, including a double while Wang also added a pair of hits.
Emily Phelan earned the start, working 6.2 innings, and Kylie Bickert pitched in relief.
The Bonnies return to action Friday, March 1 at The Spring Games against Sacred Heart. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
