Bonnies Fall to Youngstown State in Midweek Matchup

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team dropped a midweek doubleheader to Youngstown State Wednesday afternoon at Joyce Field.

The Penguins (19-10) grabbed game one, 16-7, and won the night cap, 7-2.

Game 1 – Youngstown State 16, St. Bonaventure 5
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, Olivia Moon stepped up for the Bonnies and belted a three-run home run to left field, giving the Bonnies a first-inning lead.

Youngstown State pulled one back in the top of the second before plating four runs in the top of the third to take a 6-3 lead.

The Bonnies (2-17) were quick to respond as Kennedy Haberl drove in two runs on a single in the bottom half of the third to pull the Bonnies back within one, 6-5.

The Penguins added an insurance run in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning, taking a 9-5 advantage into the final frame.

The visitors struck for seven runs in the top of the seventh, putting the game out of reach for the Brown and White.

Game 2 – Youngstown State 7, St. Bonaventure 2
The Bonnies were able to strike first in game two, plating a pair on RBI singles from Emily McKenna and Abigail Farber in the bottom of the second.

The Penguins pulled one back in the top of the third with an RBI single off the bat of Jillian Jakse.

YSU grabbed its first lead of the contest in the top of the fourth, plating a pair on a triple to right-center field from Hailey Niederkohr.

The Penguins tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the seventh, taking a 7-2 by way of a two-run home run as well as a passed ball to earn the doubleheader sweep.

Kylie Bickert went the distance in the circle for the Brown and White, striking out three.

The Bonnies are back in action Friday, March 30 when they begin a three-game Atlantic 10 series against Massachusetts at Joyce Field. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
