ARLINGTON, Va. – Adam Rankie and David Marshall Jr. each hit two-run homers, but St. Bonaventure's rally effort in the Atlantic 10 opener at George Washington fell short Friday afternoon, 12-8.
Trailing by a run in the third, the Bonnies pushed across three runs for a 3-1 advantage.
Jack Putney started the scoring with a double to center, plating Chris Hoalcraft.
Two batters later, fellow fifth-year captain Jackson DeJohn brought home two more with a hit through the left side to score both Putney and Artin Biageyian.
George Washington immediately answered, using a Bonnies error, three walks and a hit batter to score three times on the benefit of just one hit in the home half of the third for a 4-3 lead.
The Revolutionaries added two more in the fourth and one in the fifth to pad the advantage to 7-3.
Bona tried chipping away in the seventh as Rankie brought the Bonnies within a pair as his two-run bomb to left-center continued his strong season.
Following the seventh inning stretch, GW picked up what would turn out to be some much-needed insurance as Brett Young delivered a sacrifice fly.
Marshall drilled his second homer of the season to center in the eighth to pull within a run, 8-7.
George Washington (16-9, 1-0 A-10) put the game on ice with four in the eighth.
Putney had three hits while Marshall finished with three RBIs. DeJohn also registered two hits for St. Bonaventure (8-13, 0-1).
Ellis Schwartz delivered four hits for GW while Sam Gates, Steve Ditomaso and Robby Wacker all had three hits in a 14-hit attack for the hosts.
The teams renew acquaintances Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
