PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's scored the first 10 runs, then the Bonnies rolled off 10 unanswered to tie it, but the Hawks would plate the final two tallies to take a 12-10 decision over the St. Bonaventure baseball team in the rubber game of an Atlantic 10 series Sunday afternoon.
For awhile it seemed as though the Hawks would cruise to victory as they scored four in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 10-0 lead.
The Bonnies would not give up, however, roaring back in the late innings.
St. Bonaventure plated six runs on five hits to get back into the game in the sixth. Morgan Little, Jayce Tharnish and Jack Putney all had run-scoring hits for the Bonnies during the uprising.
Bona tied it with four more in the seventh – Robert Mannino drove in a run with a single through the left side before Tharnish scored another with a hit to center. A fielder's choice brought in the ninth run and Putney delivered the equalizer with a hit up the middle for a 10-10 draw.
SBU reliever Chase Playfair got a double play ball on the mound to get out of a bases loaded threat for the Hawks in the seventh and the Bonnies had the potential lead run at second in the eighth but could not convert with the runner in scoring position.
Saint Joseph's picked up the game-winning hit from Justin Igoe on a double to right-center, scoring Tim Dickinson from first and a fielder's choice later in the frame added an insurance run.
In the ninth, the Bonnies sent the tying run to the plate again after Adam Rankie worked a walk with two out, but Hawks reliever Luke Gabrysh coaxed a groundout to end the game.
Ryan Cesarini drove in six runs to lead Saint Joseph's (16-19, 6-6 A-10).
Putney drove in three runs for the Bonnies while he was joined by Tharnish, Mannino, Antonio Cordeiro and Morgan Little with two hits apiece.
Rankie singled in the seventh to add to his hitting streak, which is now at 18 games and the longest by a Bonnies player since Jesse Bosnik posted a 19-game hit streak in 2010. Bona's longest hit streak during its Division I era is 20 games, set by Randy Moley between 2007-08.
St. Bonaventure (13-21, 4-8) hosts Canisius on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
