CLEVELAND, Ohio – The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team fell to Cleveland State, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in the Bonnies first road game of the season.
The Vikings (1-1-0) found the back of the net just 4:21 into the contest as Marko Rimac found the foot of Caleb Townbridge who slotted home the goal.
Bo Drath looked to even the score right away in the sixth minute, but Cleveland State goalkeeper Stephen Yerian was there to make the save.
In the 18th and 19th minutes, Luc Finelli and Umechi Akuazoaku had chances for the Bonnies, but Yerian turned them away.
Andres Javitt and Daniel Helle also had chances on net in the first half but were not able to find the game-tying goal.
The Bonnies kept the pressure on in the second half as Dean Mercer registered a shot on net in the 48th minute and Neshawn Sutherland had a chance in the 52nd minute but were still unable to break through on the scoreboard.Â
Yarian was able to turn away Sutherland's second shot of the afternoon in the 64th minute, keeping it a one-goal game.
The Cleveland State defense would not allow another shot the rest of the contest, earning the victory.
Akuazaoku finished the contest with three shots while Sutherland registered two.
Nicolas Pucci made five saves in net for the Brown and White.
Bona's outshot the Vikings in Sunday's matchup, 12-11. The Bonnies also tallied eight shots on goal.
The Bonnies (0-2-0) return to action Thursday, Aug. 29 when they travel to Little Three rival Canisius. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
