ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure freshman Dante Bertoni has earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors, conference officials announced.

Playing in just his second collegiate tournament, Bertoni was key to the Bonnies winning their eighth consecutive Little Three Championship this past Tuesday over regional rivals Canisius and Niagara.

After an opening round 79, Bertoni got red hot in the second round at Crag Burn Golf Course in East Aurora.

The Endicott, N.Y. native started with back-to-back birdies, followed with three pars and then carded four straight birdies before making the turn. He posted a front nine 30 and got it all the way to 8-under through 13 before ultimately finishing with a sterling effort of 4-under 68, the best round of the tournament by any player.

Bertoni placed sixth overall on the individual leaderboard.

"We haven't had a freshman play that well in recent memory," St. Bonaventure head coach Ryan Swanson said. "He was just on fire for most of the second round in a way I haven't seen in recent years. It was awesome to see him perform the way he did."

The Bonnies next head to Nashport, Ohio to play for the first time in the Virtues Intercollegiate held at Virtues Golf Club Sept. 28-29.
