ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Four new inductees will join the St. Bonaventure University Athletics Hall of Fame this June as John Closs, '76 (men's swimming/track), Christine Hanley, '11 (women's lacrosse), Delmar Harrod, '80 (men's basketball) and Sean McNamee, '86 (men's swim and dive) have earned selection as the 46th induction class.
This year's induction ceremony is set to take place Saturday, June 7 as part of St. Bonaventure's Alumni Reunion Weekend. The ceremony will be held in the Quick Center for the Arts on campus at a time to be determined at a later date and will be free and open to all.
The new inductees join 159 previous St. Bonaventure Athletics Hall of Fame honorees, continuing a tradition which dates to the inaugural induction class in 1969. Induction into the Hall of Fame recognizes and honors those individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the intercollegiate program at St. Bonaventure University, and who have continued to demonstrate in their lives the values imparted by intercollegiate athletics.
"I'd like to congratulate, Delmar, Christine, Sean and John on their selection to the St. Bonaventure Athletics Hall of Fame," said St. Bonaventure Vice President & Director of Athletics Bob Beretta. "Each personified excellence during their time in the 'Brown and White.'
"There is no higher tribute we can pay to a member of our Bona Athletics family, than to be chosen for this esteemed honor. We look forward to celebrating their induction into the St. Bonaventure Athletics Hall of Fame in June."
John Closs
Closs was a standout of the Bonnies men's swimming program during the 1970s. He stepped on campus in 1972 and immediately made an impact as a freshman, winning four state titles in the butterfly. He also was part of a state crown-winning squad in the 400-medley relay.
At the time of his graduation, he held seven school records – five individual (100-fly, 200-fly, 50-free, 100-free, 100-breast) and two relays (400-medley relay and 400-free relay). During his Bonaventure career he broke the school's butterfly records a whopping 11 times and on 10 occasions he set new school standards at the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships.
He placed fourth in the 100-breaststroke at Eastern Intercollegiate Championships in 1976 as a senior, becoming just the second Bonnies swimmer to place in the top-six at the meet, breaking current Hall of Fame member and All-American Rich Bohan's school record in the process.
In 1976, he scored 26 of Bona's 41 total team points at the Eastern Collegiate Championships, 23 of which came in individual events.
A multi-sport athlete, he also ran for Bona's track and field team as a sophomore where he competed in the 400-meter hurdles and the long jump.
Christine Hanley
Hanley stands as not only one of the top women's lacrosse players in St. Bonaventure history, but one of the most decorated athletes across the board in recent Bonnies athletics memory.
A four-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection, she was named First Team All-A-10 in both 2010 and 2011 after being a Second Team honoree in 2009 and an All-Rookie Team pick in her debut season of 2008.
Hanley is the program's all-time leader in goals with 154 while her 195 total points rank second in Bonnies history only to fellow Hall of Fame member Kelly Chevez.
Her senior year, she shared the department's Letterwinner Award with Anna Cunningham and graduated as the program's leader for games started (60), groundballs (124) and caused turnovers (88) – totals she continues to rank top-10 in for Bonaventure all-time ranks.
She tallied 48 or more points in each of her final three seasons, including 63 as a sophomore in 2009 and 57 the following year.
Following her graduation, she spent time on the sidelines as an assistant coach for the Bonnies.
In the classroom, she was also a standout by earning Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team honors.
Delmar Harrod
Harrod ranks as one of the most complete all-around players statistically in Bonnies men's basketball history.
He graduated with 1,378 career points despite sharing the court with fellow Hall of Fame members Greg Sanders, Essie Hollis, Earl Belcher and Glenn Hagan during his Bonaventure career.
Called by legendary coach Jim Satalin as 'one of the best forwards to ever play at SBU,' he was on the roster for the 1977 NIT Champions as well as the 1978 NCAA Tournament and 1979 NIT squads including a 13-point effort vs. Penn in the '78 NCAA tourney.
One of seven players to record over 1,300 points and 700 rebounds in a Bonaventure uniform, he shares that distinction with program greats Bob Lanier, Andrew Nicholson, Essie Hollis, Fred Crawford, Glenn Price and George Carter – all Bonnies Hall of Fame members.
Today, Harrod stands fourth in the Bonaventure career record book for field goal percentage (55.4%), ninth in rebounds (739), and 22nd in scoring (1,378). He played in 113 career games between 1976-80, tied for 21st in program history.
He is also remembered for hitting two of the most clutch shots in program history: a top-of-the-key bucket over Syracuse's Roosevelt Bouie while Bona was down a point to send the Bonnies to the ECAC Tournament finals and onto NCAAs as well as a full-court buzzer-beater at Niagara which helped Bona to another postseason berth.
Sean McNamee
Perhaps St. Bonaventure's most decorated coach of all-time in any sport, McNamee helped create and maintain a powerhouse in the pool for Bonnies men's swimming.
Over his 26-year tenure, McNamee guided the Bonnies to five Atlantic 10 Conference championships and 15 runner-up finishes.
He was named the A-10 Coach of the Year six times, a record for the department, and 74 of his swimmers won gold medals at the A-10 championship meet while four of those earned A-10 Performer of the Meet honors. In addition, McNamee coached the Bonnies to a third-place finish or better in 23 of his 26 seasons at the helm with 40 A-10 Academic All-Conference selections, eight All-Atlantic 10 Rookie performers and four A-10 Most Outstanding performers.
McNamee carried on the storied legacy of his family name at St. Bonaventure. His father, John, and brother, Kevin, are both Hall of Fame members. John was the founder of the Bonnies men's swimming program while Kevin inherited the reins before Sean's historic tenure.Â
A native of Olean, McNamee graduated from St. Bonaventure in 1986. He began his coaching career at West Virginia University as a graduate assistant, then became the head coach at Potsdam before returning to St. Bonaventure as head coach in 1992. He replaced his brother Kevin, who left to become an administrator at George Mason University.
He retired from his coaching role in 2018 and currently serves as Bona's Associate Athletic Director for Major Gifts.
