NASHVILLE – St. Bonaventure held tight early, but No. 17/18 Vanderbilt proved to be too much in a 14-1 victory Wednesday night in a frosty Music City.
Vandy broke through in the third on a two-out single from Colin Barczi, but the Bonnies answered right back on a blast to left off the bat of Antonio Corderio. The sophomore catcher's second homer of the season was a no-doubter for a 1-1 tie in the top of the fourth.
The Commodores then took advantage of Bona wildness on the hill, using just four hits to score their first seven runs as the hosts pulled ahead, 7-1, with three runs in each the fourth and fifth frames.
Vandy (10-3) put things away in the sixth, scoring seven times to put the 10-run rule into effect.
Right-hander David James started and worked two scoreless innings, walking two and striking out four. The first-year Bonnie did not allow a hit.
Jayce Tharnish, Chris Hoalcraft, Morgan Little and Tucker Genovesi also collected hits for the Bonnies while David Marshall Jr. got on base three times, walking twice and a third via a hit by pitch.
The Bonnies entered the game third in the nation for stolen bases and had one Wednesday, coming from Hoalcraft.
St. Bonaventure (7-4) has another marquee opponent next up on the schedule as the Bonnies open up a three-game series at defending national champion Tennessee in Knoxville Friday night. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. in Knoxville on SEC Network+ and streaming through the ESPN app.
