SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team fell to Le Moyne, 2-1, on the road Wednesday afternoon.
The Dolphins (1-3-0) secured the lead midway through the second half when Andrew Piccolo tallied the eventual game-winner in the 70th minute.
The Bonnies (1-3-1) struck first as Gabriel Addo found the back of the net in the 12th minute. Addo capitalized on a Le Moyne turnover to spark the attack, as Dean Mercer played a ball down the right side and delivered a cross that Addo headed home for the early lead.
Le Moyne responded in the 24th minute when Francesco Pagano leveled the match.
Jesper van Halderen nearly gave the Bonnies back the lead in the 35th minute, but his attempt was stopped by the Dolphins' goalkeeper, sending the teams into halftime knotted at 1-1.
In the second half, Bonnies goalkeeper Felix Schöne kept his team in the game with a string of impressive saves. The freshman turned away a chance in the 49th minute, made a kick save in the 53rd, and punched out a dangerous free kick in the 57th. He finished with a career-high five saves on the day.
Mercer, van Halderen, Callum Shillington and Neshawn Sutherland paced the Bonnies with two shots apiece.
The Bonnies return home Wednesday, Sept. 10, to host Little Three rival Canisius at the Marra Athletics Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MICK GIORDANO
"First and foremost, congratulations to Le Moyne. They had tremendous energy, belief and were extremely well coached. We were a bit flat today. The boys did the best they could but didn't have that extra gear and didn't have the legs. We can't fault our guys for doing all they could and working hard until the end, so we are certainly proud of them for that. Of course, a few moments we'd love to have back and even with not having loads of success, we were in it until the end. Congratulations to Gabriel for a great goal and to Felix for some massive saves, keeping us in the game too. The group gets a nice break for all of us to recover over a few days after five games in 14 days, before we get back to work on the weekend for the derby match with Canisius. We learn, we grow and we press forward together as one."
