Piper Sets Career Goals Record As Bonnies Dominate Duquesne

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team battled to a 14-9 victory over Atlantic 10 rival Duquesne Wednesday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex, led by senior Brooke Piper's day for history in which she set a new Bonnies program record for career goals.

Piper broke the record on the game's first possession, scoring unassisted as the shot clock wound down to reach 155 career goals and pass St. Bonaventure Athletics Hall of Famer Christine Hanley, '11, for the top spot after entering the day tied with Hanley. She wasted little time in making the record her own as she registered nine total points in the contest coming from seven goals and two assists, also causing two turnovers, controlling two draws and collecting a groundball.

The Bonnies (6-5, 2-1 A-10) put themselves in a great position early with a 10-goal first half which forced Duquesne (1-7, 0-3 A-10) into recovery mode. Piper scored five of her seven goals during the first 30 minutes,  including a natural hat trick in the second quarter to give SBU all the early momentum.

Redshirt freshman midfielder Brooke Sumner enjoyed a career-best day as she piggybacked off the upperclassman's three straight scores with back-to-back goals of her own, adding an assist, doing so in just her second career game for her first collegiate points. She also assisted one of Piper's goals to bring her point total to three for a nice burst of production from Bona's youth.

Senior Grace Hollenbeck tallied her 100th career point in the first half as she recorded an assist for another Bona career milestone.

Bonaventure allowed just four goals in the first two quarters, sending the game to the break at a score of 10-4.

Despite being outscored 5-4 in the second half, SBU already had a stranglehold on the lead and would be successful in protecting it. A slowly paced third quarter saw the Bonnies tack on their final four goals of the game. Senior Megan Schillinger and junior Kierstin Hillis registered back-to-back goals to open the third period, which Piper followed up with her sixth and seventh scores of the day.

The only score of the fourth quarter came off the stick of Duquesne's Megan Marco with about three minutes to play. That tally left the game at a final score of 14-9 in favor of the Bonnies.

Sophomore goalie Judy Mahoney got the start and played the full 60 minutes between the posts, making seven saves in that time.

GAME NOTES
  • With nine total points, Brooke Piper was one point away from the single-game program record of 10. She tied her personal single-game scoring high, which she first achieved last season against VCU. Her seven goals were one away from her career single-game record of eight, which she set last season against Bucknell. That figure is tied for the most in a single game in program history as Tracy Domm and Katelyn Faas also achieved the feat in 2002 and 2006, respectively.
  • Piper also moved into fourth in program history with 192 career points, passing Brenna Houghton '08 (186).
  • Sumner tallied three points (2G-1A), one groundball and one caused turnover in just her second career game after missing last season with an injury.
  • The Bonnies' eight assists mark a single-game team high for this season.
  • Six different Bonnies scored goals in the contest: Brooke Sumner, Kierstin Hillis, Megan Schillinger, Sidney Van Tassel, Riley Milligan and Brooke Piper.
  • The Dukes outpaced the hosts in draw controls, 13-11. For SBU, Megan Schillinger led the team with four draw controls followed by Olivia Peeler and Brooke Piper with three each.
  • The Brown and White compiled an 88.8 percent success rate on clears, going 16-for-19.
  • The Bonnies outshot the Dukes, 31-25.
  • The Bonnies wore green ribbons during pregame in honor of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH LEIGHANN STAUFFER
"We told ourselves we were never going to let what happened on Saturday happen again, and I think that drove us for sure. We still have some things to work on, but those things are expected in this time and especially at the beginning of conference play. We just have to clean some stuff up and move forward."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies will travel to face Rhode Island on Saturday this weekend in the team's next action. Live coverage will be available on ESPN+.
